I didn't expect those steps to fix anything, just to reproduce the behavior
(which it did).
The "ghosts" are the supposedly missing messages.
Now, if you right-click on the newsgroup in folders pane again, select CATCH
UP, leave that newsgroup then return to it, do the 18 "ghosts" return?
