It was not a table.
The footnote indeed appears in the normal view.
I eventually solved the problem by copying the desired page to a new file,
inserting the footnote, and then copying the page back into the original
document when it appeared just fine in the correct position.
However I tried inserting another footnote and the same problem: footnote a
page lower, not visible in print view and below the margin.
I tried printing: it prints, but a page further on than it should be and
below the bottom page margin.
Any ideas?
