InDesign.exe Document Framework.rpln Error

Error that references the Document Framework.rpln file when you start or open a file (InDesign CS2)
Issue

When you start Adobe InDesign, or open an InDesign document, InDesign returns an error referencing the Document Framework.rpln file.

Details:

You see one of the following error messages:

-- Cannot open file Document Framework.rpln

-- Cannot open "filename.indd". Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign.

or, on Windows XP only:

-- InDesign has encountered a problem and needs to close... Details: AppName: indesign.exe ModNAme: document framework.rpln...

or, on Windows 2000 only:

-- InDesign.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

Solutions

Do one of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Enable recent documents in the Registry. (Windows XP and 2000)

Change the value of the NoRecentDocsMenu registry key to Allow Recent Documents On Start Menu and in InDesign.

To enable Allow Recent Documents On Start Menu in TweakUI (Windows XP):

1. Choose Start > Programs > PowerToys for Windows XP > TweakUI.

2. Select Explorer.

3. Check Allow Recent Documents On Start Menu.

4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

To enable Show Documents On Start Menu in TweakUI (Windows 2000):

1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panels, and then double-click the TweakUI control panel.

2. Click the IE tab.

3. Check Show Documents On Start Menu.

4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

To enable Recent Documents On Start Menu by manually editing the registry:

1. Choose Start > Run and type Regedit into the Open field. Click OK.

2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer

3. Double-click NoRecentDocsMenu

4. Change the specified Value data to 00 00 00 00 .

5. Click OK then close the Registry Editor.

Solution 2: Open the file from the file menu within InDesign. (Windows)

1. Start InDesign.

2. Choose File > Open.

3. Navigate to a file, select it and click Open.

Note: You may need to delete the InDesign Recovery folder before you attempt to open the file from the File menu in InDesign. The InDesign recovery folder is located, by default, in Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/InDesign/Version 4.0/InDesign Recovery. You can delete the folder, rename the folder, or open the folder and delete the folder contents. InDesign creates a new recovery folder when you restart the application.

Solution 3: Verify you have a release version of InDesign CS2 installed.

To check the version hold down Control (Windows) or command (Mac OS) while you click About InDesign under the Help menu (Windows ) or the InDesign menu (Mac OS).

The InDesign CS2 version should be (4.0.0.421)

Background information

You may see the error "InDesign has encountered a problem and needs to close... Details: AppName: indesign.exe ModName: document framework.rpln..." if you open a file created with the release version of InDesign CS or InDesign CS2 in a prerelease version of InDesign CS2.

When you change the value of the registry key, either directly through the Registry Editor, using TweakUI, or with the Group Policy Editor, InDesign CS may crash when you try to open a file through Windows Explorer or Adobe Bridge.

Product versions affected
InDesign CS2 (4.0)
