Cells that won't Lock!

I am using Excel 2007 and I need to lock two cells to prevent anyone
removing the formulae.

I highlight the two cells and on the Home tab / Cells / Format, I click on
'Lock' in the drop-down menu.

However, having done all this I can still over-type in those cells and the
formulae disappear.

What am I doing wrong?

Noel

Re: Cells that won't Lock!

Cells are locked by default. So, locking the cells does nothing until you
protect the sheet. Right click sheet tab>protection.

Re: Cells that won't Lock!

Thanks for that.

The problem now is that the whole sheet is protected and I am unable to
enter the figures in the cells I didn't want to protect.

The worksheet involves the calculation of one currency to another. I need to
stop anyone altering the formulae that does this but they need to be able to
enter the amounts they want to convert.

Is there a way I can just protect the two cells I need to remain unchanged?

Re: Cells that won't Lock!

Put your cursor on the cells block just to the left of the col A title and
above the 1 title row.Right click>Unlock all>now goto the ones to
protect>lock>protect sheet. Basic.

Re: Cells that won't Lock!

Thanks again for your help.

I don't know if I am doing something stupid but when I right click on the
rectangle with the triangle in it (left of Column A and above Row 1) I do
not get the option to 'Unlock All'.

I am using Excel 2007.

Re: Cells that won't Lock!

Noel,

I have the same problem and its a case of the cells you want protected to
be locked or unlocked and then protect the sheet. I can never get this right
first time and can never remember the correct order and have to play around
til it works.
It is basic stuff to the experts but damned if I can ever get it first time.

I can never remember if I should lock or unlock the cells I want to protect
and then the sheet :-)
Play around you will get it!.
