Excel 2007 - Automatically Updating Links!

Hello all,

I've recently purchased Office 2007 after using Excel 2000 & Excel
2003.

With Excel 2007 I have the following issue.

My files that have links to very large files automatically get updated
when I tell the software that I'd like to enable macros and maintain
links to other files.

In the past XL2000 & 2003 would display the following "This workbook
contains links to other data sources. [...]". At this point you could
answer Update, Don't Update, Help.

With XL2007 when you choose to allow macros and links to be updated it
AUTOMATICALLY links to the files! This can take upward of 45 minutes
and is a definite deal breaker.

Is there a way to maintain links and macros and not have XL2007
automatically update links which could take a long time?

XL2007 is becoming a very frustrating purchase. I picked up John
Walkenbach's book on Excel 2007 Tips and Tricks and this issue isn't
covered there.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Excel 2007 - Automatically Updating Links!

With a workbook having the linking formulas active click Edit Links on the
Data tab. Then click Startup Prompt. I think you want the second option
"Don't display the alert and don't update..."

This has effect only if the source workbook is not open I believe.

RE: Excel 2007 - Automatically Updating Links!

I too have a similar problem.

Some additional observations

I can update the destination file with data via a link, but I can not point
the link to a new file.
