Autofill a series from the name box?

If I want to autofill a series of values from 1 to 10, using the autofill
handle is the easiest way to do it. But if I want to autofill 1 to 1000,
that's a bit more tedious with the autofill handle. Is it possible to do it
from the name box? I've been told it can be done but I can't figure it out.
Help doesn't tell you and I've checked several books and references, but
they all talk about using the fill handle only.

Re: Autofill a series from the name box?

You can use the name box to select the range you're interested in and fill a
series.

Suppose you want to fill A1:A10 with the sequential numbers 1 to 10.

Enter 1 in A1

Enter the range in the name box - A1:A10 then hit enter

Goto the menu Edit>Fill>Series
Step value: 1
Stop value: 10
OK

Re: Autofill a series from the name box?

Enter 1 in A1, and click back into A1,
Click in the Name box and type in
A1000,

Hold <Shift> and hit <Enter>

This selects the range.

From the Menu Bar,
<Edit> <Fill> <Series> <OK>

And you should be done!

The default settings for that dialog box should be exactly what you want.

Re: Autofill a series from the name box?

I also noticed you can fill the selected range by hitting control-D and that
will fill the range with 1. But if you want to fill a series, looks like
you have to use the menu.

You could hold down the Alt key and type the letters eis, then let go of the
Alt key and press the Enter key.
