IE 7 won't connect but AOL will
There has been some update (either Windows or Dell) that causes IE 7 on my
Dell Inspiron 1521 with Vista not to connect to the internet. AOL works fine and I can get to the internet through AOL, but it slows me down. I was able to go back (restore) for a while, but something keeps coming down and breaking IE. I'm running Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition (SAVCE) 10.2.0.706 and definitions are current. There were not items detected during a recent full scan. SAVCE has no trouble connect, nor does Yahoo IM and Skype. Its just IE 7. Thanks |

Its just > IE > 7. > > Thanks The first thing you should do is completely uninstall your Symantec AV and then run the Norton Removal Tool. I don't know if it is causing your problems but anything Norton/Symantec usually causes serious problems with internet connections and email clients. Personally, I think Norton/Symantec security products are nothing but junk and garbage, not worth the money it costs to make the box (retail) they come in. Every year, more and more people are refusing to use this bloated garbage. This is why Norton/Symantec, McAfee and ZoneAlarm pay computer vendors to preinstall their products on computers. I don't say this to offend you or anyone else. If Norton/Symantec security products work for you then you should continue to use them if you wish. Norton/Symantec is NOT compatible with Vista regardless of what Norton/Symantec tells you and their support is probably the worst in the business. My opinions are based upon long term use of Norton/Symantec products. Also, based upon personal experience you should avoid anything McAfee, ZoneAlarm and TrendMicro. Others will disagree with me and it is certainly their right to do so. The choice is yours to make. However, you should COMPLETELY uninstall your Symantec AV and see if this solves your problems before pursuing other options. Once uninstalled you should install a different AV product before connecting to the internet. Do yourself a big favor and go with AVG, Avast or NOD32 for your antivirus solutions. AVG and Avast also provide free versions. Go for an AV program, not a Security Suite. Security Suites are nothing but bloated software that use enormous amounts of your system's resources. They create more problems than they solve. C.B. -- It is the responsibility and duty of everyone to help the underprivileged and unfortunate among us. |

Re: IE 7 won't connect but AOL will
Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed": http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818 If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the following: 1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall. NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it. 2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB944533)" via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right) and reboot. 3. Re-do #1 above. 4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional Updates category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's additional security. 5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party firewall. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ cweaver871 wrote: > There has been some update (either Windows or Dell) that causes IE 7 on my > Dell Inspiron 1521 with Vista not to connect to the internet.
