Is there a solution for problem (btw I am running Vista Home Premium)?
WMA files downloaded from the internet became DAT files. No such problem
with IE6 on XP SP2 even though files are from the same internet source.

Delete your Temporary Internet Files and/or run Disk Cleanup

Nope, did both deletion and disk cleanup. It didn't work. Any other remedies?
