Mailto Problems
I just added the Read Mail button. But when I click on it, I get this:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access this item." Another problem I'm having with IE 7 is also mailto. When I view a webpage and click the email icon to send the page, I get this: "Could not perform the operation because the default mail client is not properly installed." I checked my default settings and Outlook Express is my default client. Everything was fine until recently. It seems IE 7 is more trouble then it't worth. I'm thinking of just going with Firefox. If anyone has any solutions to the above 2 problems, I'd really appreciate it. |

Re: Mailto Problems
Outlook is not installed. Only Outlook Express.
I tried the steps below but still have a problem. When I go to Set Program Access and Default, it won't change. It remains on "Use my current email program." It won't change to Outlook Express. In fact, nothing can be changed. I tried changing to Windows Media Player as my default media player. But it remains on "use my current media player." I tried restarting after making the changes and still no luck. Re: Mailto Problems
I shut down ZoneAlarm Anti-Virus. Now when I click the Read Mail icon, it
DOES go to Outlook Express. But I stil can't get the settings to "stick" on Set Program Access and Default. I turned ZA back on and now the Read Mail does not go to Outlook Express. I'm just an intermediate user at best and don't really know where to look in ZoneAlarm or any of the Spyware stuff (I have Spybot, Ad Adware, SpyWareBlaster, CounterSpy and AVG Anti-Spyware) to make adjustments. PDF files are also having problems opening (I have Adobe Reader 8.1). You would think IE would work with these programs to adjust stuff like this. At first I thought it was a problem within XP Pro. When I had IE 6. none of these problems existed. It's very frustrating. I want you to know I really appreciate your efforts to help. If you have any other suggestions, I'll continue to plug away trying to fix these problems. Re: Mailto Problems
I emailed ZA support and they sent me a solution that appears to have worked.
The Read Mail command now works and I have no mailto problems. I will share the response below to any who have ZA. Thanks PA BEAR for your help. From ZA: I understand that your settings are not working correctly. - I apologize for any inconvenience that this issue may be causing you. There may be a problem with your TrueVector service. ZoneAlarm is dependent on its TrueVector service to function properly. You may need to refresh the files associated with this service, especially after a networking change, OS change, or ZoneAlarm update. To repair this problem, please follow these steps. 1. Reboot your system into Safe Mode. The method is determined by your OS but normally either pressing F8 at the beep, or holding the control key during boot up works. For more information on rebooting in Safe Mode, click Start, then Help. Click the Search tab, and type in SAFE MODE. 2. Open the Internet Logs directory be c:\windows\internet logs Press CTRL on your keyboard and hit F.We will do 3 searches, Search *.LDB and erase all that it finds. Search *.RDB and erase all that it finds. Search *.TMP and erase all that it finds. 3. Empty your Recycle Bin. 4. Reboot your system. Re: Mailto Problems
Thanks very much for this feedback.
Keep that email handy as you may need to repeat those steps after installing any further Cumulative Security Updates for IE (usually released every 2 months). Or totally disable all ZA modules and enable the Windows Firewall before installing updates. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ runner50 wrote: > I emailed ZA support and they sent me a solution that appears to have > worked.
