PREVENTING HISTORY DELETION

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have an Inspiron 1501 Lap Top with window Vista Home Premium. About 2 days
ago I cleared my computer History. However, I have now discovered that on the
address bar, all my web pages (i.e.www.hotmail.com, www.cnn.com, etc) are
automatically deleted as a result, I have to type a web address every time I
wish to visit some of my favourite sites whereas, before I cleaned my
history, i would use the arrow at the end of the address bar (right hand
side) and just click on the web site that I usually visit. How can I keep the
web sites (on the address bar) that regularly visit?

Can anybody assist me. I would be very very grateful. I searched in Google
for an answer but unfortunately I could not find one.

Kind regards, thank you very much.

Marco.

They are part of history! if you delete ALL history then yes you WILL delete
those drop-down sites.
Why did you delete the History in the first place?

Re: PREVENTING HISTORY DELETION

Hi,
The TypedURLs list is kept in the registry at
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs] It is
separate from the IE History folder. Clearing the History in previous
versions of Internet Explorer didn't clear this list. As you've discovered,
clearing the History in IE7 *does* clear this list.

Workarounds:
1. Safe and easy... Use CCleaner www.ccleaner.com to clear the History- do
not check the TypedURLs box.

2. Not recommended... Use Search (Advanced- Include non-indexed, hidden and
system files) to find your History folder at
C:\Users\your user account\AppData\Local\Microsoft\History
Clear out the History folder manually

3. Export (save) the registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs]
If the TypedURLs list is deleted, you can merge that key back into the
registry to restore the list.

Additional tip:
Only URLs typed into the Address Bar are saved in this list. If you type
URLs in via File> Open, instead of the Address Bar, they aren't saved in the
TypedURLs key and you can keep a select few URLs in the drop-down list.

Hope this helps,
Don

RE: PREVENTING HISTORY DELETION

I suggest adding the pages you might want to go back to, to your Favorites.
Just click Favorites, Add To Favorites. Then you can save them directly to
Favorites or to Links or some other sub-folder of Favorites.

To go back to them later, again click Favorites, and your Favorites list
should pop up.
Then click on the page you want.

The simplest solution is to add the websites to your Favorites. This will
eliminate the possibility of them being erased when you choose to delete your
typed URLs.

Have a nice day.
