Attachments can't find application to open

Using IE7, I can't open email attachments, regardless of source. Coming from
Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook or any other web-based email program, when I
try to open an attachment it can't find the application to open them. This is
for basic Microsoft office documents, e.g. Word or Excel. When I try to open
an attachment, the dialog box says it is an unknown file type and prompts me
to search the internet for an application to open it, even though it's
clearly a Word or Excel file for which I have the correct program installed.
If I save the attachment it opens fine, but I'd like to be able to open
attachments directly from email. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Attachments can't find application to open

Are you referring to opening attachments to a message accessed via the
account's webmail page or via a Mail Client (e.g., Outlook Express;
Outlook)?

Windows version?

Re: Attachments can't find application to open

Thanks - webmail pages for the most part. I don't think she uses mail
clients, the examples she showed and I tried were all via webmail pages,
yahoomail, outlook web access, etc. (Trying to fix my mother's machine while
home for holidays.) Windows is version XP and no problem opening the
attachments once we save them to desktop or c:.

Re: Attachments can't find application to open

Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one?

When was IE7 installed?

What anti-virus application is in use? What, if any, third-party firewall
is installed? What, if any, anti-spyware applications are installed (other
than Windows Defender)?
===================================
=> Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

1. Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons;

2. Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

=> Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

Re: Attachments can't find application to open

Thanks, just solved it - was a problem since she got the computer. Just
needed to add .doc and .xls to the control panel "Folder Options>File types
etc." Found on a Dell helpsite.

Thanks for helping!
