IE6.0 and XP corrupted by IE 7.0
A few days ago I inadvertently installed IE7.0 and decided I hated it so I
uninstalled it and I'm currently running IE6.0 SP2 which is what I had before. Since I uninstalled 7.0, my left search pane doesn't work like it used to. This is the search pane that comes up when I click "search" in the IE6.0 toolbar. I am using Altavista as my default search engine that opens in the left pane when I click the "search" button, and it provides me with a list of my search results. However, when I click on those resulting links, nothing happens. If I right click and select "open in new window", it works. So the links are good, but the left click button doesn't do anything with them. I like the way it used to work so I don't have to keep closing windows. Why don't the links work anymore? How can I fix this? IE7.0 seems to have messed it up. BTW, when I tried to post on this board I wasn't signed up and tried to left click "sign up now" or whatever comes up on the login page. NOTHING happened, in fact none of the links on that page work for me. I finally got logged in with another person's ID. I have since I deleted the Altavista cookie, but it didn't do anything to fix the problem. I still can't get the links in the left search pane to work. This ALL started when I installed and uninsalled IE 7.0. I have tried to RESTORE my system using System Restore to a date before I installed IE7.0, but my system says it cannot restore to that date for some reason. I believe IE7.0 corruped something that I can't fix now. I wish I'd never accepted the damn upgrade. In fact, I'm not sure I even did...some of this crap happens automatically!! I also cannot get my computer to read certain CDs now. My girlfriends PC with Vista reads them just fine, and mine used to, but now it doesn't. It seems to be related to IE7.0 as well. It seems like a horrible piece of software to me. I think MSFT is responsible for this and I want to know how to fix it. This PC is only a year old, and I shouldn't be having these problems that STARTED when I installed IE7.0. I didn't make a backup CD when I bought my PC because it took something like 18 CDs to do it! My PC was shipped with NO CDs, all preinstalled SW. I bought a backup drive later but forgot to backup the OS. So how can I get my XP to work like it used to? Is there a place to re-load XP? Finally, I tried to backup my PC today to an HP Personal Media Drive. When the Sonic software asks me where I want to backup, it gives me the option of the DVD/CD, but NOT the PMD. It's like it doesn't even recognize that it's there. This also used to work before I installed IE7.0. I can still manually backup by copying files, but the scheduling feature doesn't work. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! IE 7.0 is a POS! |

Yep, IE 7 has all sorts of "Copy Protection" built in.
It's a Real Mess. I installed it then took it off my system three times and found it to be totally useless. Re: IE6.0 And XP Corrupted By IE 7.0
D. Spencer,
Yeah, I think IE7.0 is a POS, and takes away a lot of what I like in 6.0. But regardless of that, did you have it screw anything up? As I said, I uninstalled it but it appears to have corruped other files on my computer and I don't know how to fix them. So far, I found that is screwed up my "search" function, some links on other websites, ability to read some CDs (don't know why some work) and my Personal Media Drive isn't detected in my backup software. I'll probably find more stuff the POS software corrupted. Now all I want is my original 6.0 functionality restored. My "system restore" doesn't work because it probably corrupted it too. I think I need to reinsall XP, but I don't know how to do that....I have no discs with XP on them. "D. No...
I managed to roll back to IE 6 safely each of the three times. I'm not going to try again until I see IE 8. Whoever developed IE 7 should be hanged, drawn and quartered. Re: IE6.0 and XP corrupted by IE 7.0
Kayman,
So you think I'm to blame for downloading some POS Microsoft software accidently that is REALEASED and SUPPOSED to work correctly then uninstalling it and having it trash my computer? I didn't want the POS in the first place. I didn't think IE7.0 was that big of a deal, so when it loaded I wasn't concerned until I saw what a piece of garbage it is. I thought I was basically getting some IE6.0 enhancements, not that trash. So why won't my computer work correctly anymore after uninstalling the garbage software? Is THAT my fault? I didn't cause anything, MSFT did. I just found out that I can't even load PDF files now....how did I cause that, a-hole? This has been going on for a few weeks now and I still can't get IE6.0 to work correctly.
