Resetting Internet Explorer
Hi,
Several weeks ago my ie7 started playing up. How it played up visually is shown in this picture because I am not quite sure exactly how to describe it. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...ueryerror2.jpg At the time I was told to use the 'Reset Internet Explorer' button in the 'Internet Options' section. This worked for a day or two, or rather it seemed to, but then the problem returned and now happens exceptionately frequently, I chose to do nothing about it because I was in the middle of term and really needed all of my computer to work, and so didn't want to risk screwing things up. I should probably explain, I currently have Windows XP and am running IE7 through a wired connection (I don't know if that is relevant but I was asked it last time round). I also have lavasoft Ad-aware and AVG virus checker, both of which are fully updated. But now it's the holidays and I have a week to kill with just reading, so I'd quite like to fully uninstall ie7, replace it with ie6, and then redownload ie7. I went 'Control Panel'>'Add or Remove Programs' and scrolled down to 'Windows Internet Explorer 7'. However when I pressed remove, after a short while it came up with this. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...n2/helpie7.jpg 3 questions: If I press 'yes' will internet Explorer 7 be automatically replaced with Internet Explorer 6, or am I in trouble? Second, if I press 'yes' does that mean I will have to reinstall all of the windows updates that are mentioned in the list, because there's a heck of a lot of them? And finally, if I press 'yes' what are the chances of programmes not working properly? I'm sorry if it seems I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, but I want to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing before I try and fix this problem. I have absolutely no idea how the problem started. In fact if someone has any other/different ideas as to how i can fix the problem shown in the first photoshop link, it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Chris. |

Re: Resetting Internet Explorer
1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode: Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons). Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx [Skip this... 2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!] 3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If it does, do NOT reinstall IE7. Uninstalling IE7 http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177 IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...lications.aspx 4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7: Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER! http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install [And I strongly recommend using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.] Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it to take full advantage of IE7's additional security. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ chrisashcroft2 wrote: > Several weeks ago my ie7 started playing up.
