I can't download anything from the internet except windows update which I
fixed by deleting the software distribution folder. This happened after I did
a registry repair, there were nearly 2000 errors, so probably something
happpened there. I don't have any anti virus software working so it couldn't
be that and I am loathe to re-set Internet Explorer as this has been tried by
others with the same problem and it hasn't helped. I also have the problem
when downloading pictures I only have the option of bitmap images in the save
as box, not jpeg or any other type of picture image. Any suggestion for a fix
would be greatly appreciated

Format & reinstall Windows (whatever version it is), then take care of
