Standard user cannot add search providers
When I try to add a search provider to IE7 (as a standard user in
Vista) I get the following message: "The search provider could not be installed. This might have happened because: - A required file could not be downloaded - The website is unavailable - You are not connected to the Internet You might want to try again later." I can add providers when logged on as an administrator or when using "Run as administrator" but (as expected) they don't appear for the standard user. Does anyone know how to get round this? |

Re: Standard user cannot add search providers
Hi,
I suspect a browser add-on or a third-party security program as the cause- perhaps a program or feature which blocks some type of content for standard users. Try disabling add-ons: See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp for troubleshooting information. More at: IEBlog Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx The troublesome program may not show up as an add-on. Disable other security, privacy, ad-blocking, appearance tweaking programs to see if one of them is causing the problem. Any program that interacts with Internet Explorer could be causing this. A firewall or security suite might be causing this problem. Be sure to turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall before disabling a third-party firewall or security suite during testing. Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] "ssg31415926" <newsjunkmail@gmail.com> wrote in message news:27e92ad3-7da5-4d50-a771-ca71923f88ba@r60g2000hsc.googlegroups.com... > When I try to add a search provider to IE7 (as a standard user in > Vista) I get the following message: > > "The search provider could not be installed. > > This might have happened because: > - A required file could not be downloaded > - The website is unavailable > - You are not connected to the Internet > > You might want to try again later." > > I can add providers when logged on as an administrator or when using > "Run as administrator" but (as expected) they don't appear for the > standard user. Does anyone know how to get round this? Thanks for this post. I will try some of these when I get home but in the meantime I did find one way round it: Disable UAC (and restart) Add the search providers Enable UAC (and restart) I can't believe it's supposed to work like this so I'll try the things you suggested. |

It definitely shouldn't work like that. I just solved the problem: I uninstalled Norton Internet Security (which came with my laptop and) which had expired and tried adding a provider and it worked. This just confirms past experiences of Norton products: they're rubbish. |
