Really slow ie

Hiya,

I've done something to ie (ver 7). It's like going uphill in sand. Go
forward 3 feet and slide back 2.

Started just recently--last day or 2. I'll click on a link and get "waiting
for http:..." etc for a moment, then it shows the normal display...but if
there are any other links or whatever, I get more "waiting for http:...."
etc for awhile, then bingo--website is there. Only on this machine--other 2
on same network/internet connection are fine. Even a notebook using
wireless is faster than this computer. Yet, on this computer, it takes
minutes to load a page while "waiting" and the others are fine. I can even
run firefox on this computer and it's fine. Just ie. What gives?

I've reset ie to original. I've run all the utilities I can think of to
eliminate problems (registry checkers, etc). Other programs are fine...no
slowdown I can detect (copy files, database prgs, etc)

Can anyone suggest what I can look for?

TIA
ron

Re: Really slow ie

To determine if your problem is caused by a third-party add-on, start IE
7 with no add-ons. If the problem no longer occurs, one (or more)
add-ons was causing the problem.

For Windows XP:
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

For Windows Vista:
Type Internet Explorer in the Start Search box > click Internet Explorer
(No Add-Ons)

To determine if your problem is caused by incorrect configuration
settings, reset IE 7 to its original configuration. If the problem no
longer occurs, one (or more) incorrect configuration settings was
causing the problem.

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > under Reset Internet Explorer
Settings, click Reset.

Note: If you want to continue to use any of your add-ons after a reset,
you'll have to reinstall them.

Most third party security applications (security suites, anti-virus
programs, anti-spyware programs, firewalls, ad-blockers, etc.) interact
with Internet Explorer to protect your computer from malicious software.
Check the settings in your security software to see if this is happening
to you.

Problems with IE 7 can also be caused by the presence of viruses or
other malicious software.

Tried this prior to posting and had no effect.

Bingo! I'm using Norton Systemworks and if I disable Auto-Protect IE starts
working wonderfully again. Enable Auto-Protect and s-l-o-w. Un-Enable
fast. Etc.

So, guess I'll have to start looking at other antivirus options as I can
find no solution to this on Symantic's website. It had to be something they
changed within the last day or 2 (I've got it auto-updating as well) because
it worked fine before. Darn it all--I hate when people mess up my computer!

Thanks again for you input, Leonard. I appreciate your quick response.

Re: Really slow ie

Glad to help. Norton software causes trouble in several ways, unfortunately.

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all
Norton software via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

4. Immediately install the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32* or
KAV7**

5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.

Do your problems persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall
the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! Should you
decide to reinstall the Norton application, I recommend not installing any
Norton Add-ons for a while.]
