IE7/Vista Home: Can't get to Log-In pages
Hi All...
I know there was a thread on this somewhere, but I am unable to locate it now. I have Vista Home and IE7 on my new laptop (6 mos old). Up until last week, everything worked fine. All of a sudden, I can't get to any page that has a log-in. Email, banking, EBay, this site... I don't know much about mucking around with the virus and spyware programs, but I have AVG Free, and I think Windows Defender is doing something, but I really don't know how to check. I have done all MS Updates (except the 102 MB Office one; I'm on Dial-up at 26400, if lucky) and AGV updates. I can acess everything ok on this computer (XP & IE7). I have compared all security and privacy settings from the new computer to this one through Internet Tools. Everything is the same. The local computer shop suggested downloading Firefox and see if the problem persists with it; same problem. I have a box that pops up from the task bar that says "some programs are being blocked from running" (or something close to that). I've tried to look at them, but I don't have a clue what I'm doing. If someone could help walk me through checking virus programs/firewalls, etc. in simple steps, it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Di |

Re: IE7/Vista Home: Can't get to Log-In pages
Hi,
First try disabling browser add-ons from IE> Tools> Manage add-ons. If that resolves the issue, re-enable add-ons one at a time until the problem returns. The culprit could be as simple as a pop-up blocker. Next, from Start> Run> (type in) msconfig, go to the Startup tab. You can disable Defender and AVG. Restart and see if the problem is resolved. Any other security programs which could be affecting both browsers? From Windows Help, search for DEP. Check the DEP is enabled only for "essential Windows programs." Internet Options> Privacy, try a (cookie) setting of Low or Accept all. Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] "Di Willard" <DiWillard@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:7A837EFF-3A63-4100-8437-C3FA52037F45@microsoft.com... > Hi All... > I know there was a thread on this somewhere, but I am unable to locate it now. > > I have Vista Home and IE7 on my new laptop (6 mos old). Re: IE7/Vista Home: Can't get to Log-In pages
Hi Don,
Thanks for your help. Although i never succeeded in uninstalling Defender, I did figure out that I had tried to stop a couple of programs from automatically booting in the "startup" configuration. I reset that to normal startup, and the problem seems to be gone. I am re-installing AVG now... (4hrs 47 min... Yippee! I love Dial Up! :( ). Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
