Browsing History disappears with IE7
O/S is XP Pro, XP2. Have two systems that are virtually identical. However,
when you attempt to view browsing history on one system, it does not show any history available. If you go to the user folder where the history is stored, all the history for 20 days (as set in settings) is present. If found a key called extensible cache in the registry that was different on the system that doesn't work vs the system that does. Deleted the key and history worked for several days then stopped working again. Rebooting the system will now bring the history back in IE7. Not really sure why two almost identical systems work so differently. Have NEVER had trouble viewing browsing history on the one system, but have had this problem on the other system ever since I installed IE7. If I revert back to IE6, history is there and visible. Reinstalling IE7 allows the history to work for about a day, then it 'disappears' again. I know others have mentioned variants of this problem on google searches but no solutions seem to be available so far. |

Re: Browsing History disappears with IE7
Hi,
> Have two systems that are virtually identical. Have you compared browser add-ons? Does the problem still occur if add-ons are disabled? See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp for troubleshooting information. More at: IEBlog Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx Are the same third-party security/privacy programs installed? Are settings the same? When IE7 is reinstalled are antivirus/antispyware programs disabled? More on that at: Known issues - Installation tips - IE7: http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] "lferg8" <lferg8@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:11D7DA84-03CF-4270-B64F-1BEE569E102F@microsoft.com... > O/S is XP Pro, XP2. Re: Browsing History disappears with IE7
There are a few third party programs that differ, but I have yet to determine
what is causing the history to disappear. As far as anti-virus and spyware programs, all settings are the same on both systems. When reinstalling IE7 (which solves the problem temporarily), all antivirus and spyware programs are disabled (if they aren't, the updates won't load properly and must be added with Windows Update). And yes if add-ons are disabled, it still fails to show history. Actually I have two desktops and two laptops with XP Pro SP2. They all have the same anti-virus/spyware programs running and the one system (desktop) is the only one having the problem. Obviously something is different or it would work, but I have not been able to limit it to anything in particular as of yet except for finding that using .html files on the desktop caused the 'extensible cache' key to be added that I mentioned in the first post. Deleting that key removed the problem of the history disappearing when accessing an .html file. Still trying to eliminate possible causes, but unsuccessful so far. Re: Browsing History disappears with IE7
Hi,
1. I would keep looking at third-party programs as a possible cause. 2. [Longshot] The History folder may be corrupted. Login as another user with administrative privileges and see if you can delete the affected history folder. Re: Browsing History disappears with IE7
Yes, this is a weird one. At least if the history disappears now, a reboot
will recover it, unlike what was happening before I found the 'extensible cache' key in the registry. One by one, I'm going to turn off automatic programs that I use to keep the system in good operating during the night and see if any of those are the problem. Although, the other desktop runs all those every night as well. Just going to take a while to go through the process of illimination I guess. "Don Varnau" wrote: > Hi, > 1.
