IE7 download problem
Apologies if this has already been dealt with.
IE7 on XP school network: when a link to a docx file is clicked, IE7offers to open or save a zip file. I understand that the new Word format is a compressed xml document and I can save the file and change the file extension - but I shouldn't have to! Has anyone found a fix for this? Word is associated with docx and I can find no setting in IE7 that addresses this issue. Cheers pgeo |

RE: IE7 download problem
Why is there no fix, help, or answers for this problem. I know lots of people
are having this issue (docx files being renamed to zip by IE7 on Windows XP) and I've been searching online (using Yahoo, Google, and MSN) for over an hour and all I find is people asking the same question with no good answers. Some suggest the web server that the file is uploaded to needs to update their MIME types. If that was the answer, why is it only IE, not Firefox/Opera/etc? And people say they've fixed it themselves by "reseting" IE (what does "reset" IE mean anyway? reinstall? Why can't they just say "reinstall" instead of using an ambitious term without instruction?). Others say that they've "reset" IE and it doesn't work. Someone suggested changing the IE "Security Settings to Open files by extension instead of content", which didn't work either How is it that what seems to be a huge problem that a LOT of people are trying to find answers to is seemingly ignored by anyone who knows the answer or is part of Microsoft. I really feel like we're all being left high and dry by MS. Shouldn't there be an IE update fixing this? Shouldn't there be MS people answering this question for people in the various forums. I should have been able to find the answer in 10 minutes; instead I'm still clueless after 80 minutes of searching and reading. This is an idiotic situation. Why aren't there answers? How is this post almost 3 months old without an answer? What the hell is wrong with MS? Does MS WANT people to stop using IE and just use other browsers like Firefox that aren't a pain in the ass? |

I don't usually have a problem with downloads. 2. Reset IE? Re: IE7 download problem
I too have had this proplem ever since we started using the new Office
format. Just today I did a test with a .pptx file. In IE7 when I right-clicked and selected Save File As it gave me only .zip and ALL files as the file type. I know I can select all files and manualy type in the .pptx file type, but that should not be required. I next did the same thing in Firefox and when I selected save link as it automaticly identified the file as a Office 2007 Powerpoint file. Why doesn't IE recognize the office 2007 files correctly? If there is a fix for this I have been unable to locate and I have been looking since Office 2007 was released. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: IE7 download problem
Hello,
I have this same problem: IE versions 6 and 7 do not open DOCX files properly. My environment: - I have enabled MIME settings on the Apache web server (see settings at the bottom) - I have Windows XP. Vista appears to function better: you can define in it that DOCX should be opened with Word. This setting has been made on the operating system level, but that did not help - I have Word 2003 with 2007 extentions from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en - DOCX files open fine from local hard drive - DOCX files open fine with Firefox - Resetting IE settings did not help - End result with IE is that it opens docx files in Winzip. Winzip does not have any settings with docx file type. -- MIME settings: <mime-mapping> <extension>docx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>dotx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.template</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>sldx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.slide</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>pptx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>ppsx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.slideshow</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>potx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.template</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>xltx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.template</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>xlsx</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>xlam</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.ms-excel.addin.macroEnabled.12</mime-type> </mime-mapping> <mime-mapping> <extension>xlsb</extension> <mime-type>application/vnd.ms-excel.sheet.binary.macroEnabled.12</mime-type> </mime-mapping> Regards, Timo R. |

The Work 2003 viewer can't handle DOCX. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM Do not reply with email |

It works fine To whom are you talking and about what? Please quote the post you bare replying to, and don't change the subject line. Thank you. |
