document information panel was unable to load

I'm using Office 2007 and when I try to open the document properties in Word
or Excel using the Office Button, Prepare, Properties I receive the message
in the properties box above the document "the document information panel was
unable to load". I can click the down arrow on the left and select Advanced
Properties and the document properties dialog will open. I ran the Word
Options, Resources, Diagnose to see if it would solve the problem but it
didn't.

Has anyone run into this problem and know how to fix it?

TIA,
Gregg

Re: document information panel was unable to load

I encountered that problem a while back, and never did find a fix. I tried
all of the standard fixes, but none worked. I ended up creating a new
Windows user profile to resolve it. Not very satisfying, but it was
effective, and it hasn't recurred.

Before resorting to that... I assume you've tried starting Word with the /a
switch and/or in Safe Mode. Neither of those worked for me, which basically
meant that the problem couldn't be solved by deleting normal.dotm or the
Data key in the registry.

Herb, I have tried the options you suggested short off creating a new user
profile. I'm not sure I understand how that would resolve the problem?

Re: document information panel was unable to load

A frequent diagnostic I perform when the standard Word diagnostic methods
don't work is to see if the problem occurs for another user on the same
computer. This lets me know if the problem is in the settings, or if there
is an installation problem with Word overall.

In my case, the problem was in the user settings--but I couldn't pinpoint
exactly where. When I created a new user profile, the document panel problem
did not occur for the new user. I then copied parts of the new user's
settings structure to the "bad" one, to see if I could fix the bad profile.
I couldn't.

When I reversed the process, however, and copied the "bad" user settings to
the working profile, the working profile was quickly corrupted and exhibited
the document panel problem.

I finally gave up and created another pristine user profile, and the problem
went away again. I then moved my files over to the new profile and manually
re-established my preferences and other settings... and deleted the old
profiles. The problem has not recurred.

Thanks Herb, I'll give it a try.
