Replacing OWC Reporting with Excel Services FEATURED ARTICLE John Campbell, a program manager who works on the Excel Services teams. As a Program Manager on the Excel Services team, I often field emails from people who have a thin reporting solution that is based on Office Web Components (OWC). They would like to migrate that solution to Excel Services, but aren't sure how or what the pitfalls are. In this entry I will talk about what OWC functionality Excel Services can be used to replace, some common pitfalls, and step by step instructions for putting together a sample report that overcomes the most common OWC conversion pitfall . http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/archive/...-services.aspx <http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/archive/2008/01/09/replacing-owc-reporting-with-excel-services.aspx> Creating a Docx Html preview Handler FEATURED ARTICLE Vincent Rothwell AKA TheKid.me.uk <http://blog.thekid.me.uk/default.aspx> The next version of .Net contains a new DLL called WindowsBase. This DLL contains a new namespace called System.IO.Packaging which contains lots of useful classes for manipulating Word documents in the docx format. Essentially a .docx document is just a zip file containing a bunch of files, mostly XML. The System.IO.Packaging namespace allows you to open and manipulate these files. I thought I would try and use these classes to create a HttpHandler which would allow you to preview a word document in the docx format. This would not only need to convert the text stored in the document, but also the images contained in the document. http://blog.thekid.me.uk/archive/200...harepoint.aspx MVP in the Spotlight: Wouter van Vugt FEATURED MVP Don't forget to check this out Wouter's blog. Wouter has a reputation for being and OpenXML expert contributing to Openxml.org and for his book <http://openxmldeveloper.org/articles/1970.aspx> of which we handed out lots of copies last year. He has recently been very active on the tools front <http://blogs.code-counsel.net/wouter/lists/posts/post.aspx?id=30> coming up with a handy XML-mapper for content controls in Word and a Viewer for WordML from inside Word. ( http://blogs.code-counsel.net/Wouter/default.aspx <http://blogs.code-counsel.net/wouter/default.aspx> ) Advertorial For people interested in Advanced SharePoint Programming, a boot camp style 5 day training course (Feb 11 - 15) will be held at New Horizons, Melbourne. MOSSIG members have can avail 15% discount. More details are available on the course website: http://www.nhaustralia.com.au/course...16140809239327 <http://www.nhaustralia.com.au/course.aspx?id=cour2007101616140809239327> Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) for Windows Server 2003 is information protection technology that works with RMS-enabled applications to help safeguard digital information from unauthorized use-both online and offline, inside and outside of the firewall. RMS augments an organization's security strategy by protecting information through persistent usage policies, which remain with the information, no matter where it goes. Organizations can use RMS to help prevent sensitive information-such as financial reports, product specifications, customer data, and confidential e-mail messages-from intentionally or accidentally getting into the wrong hands.
