Software Objectives

Happy New Year Mossig members, we have finally recovered from all the
parties and fireworks and its back to business for our monthly meetings.
We've got some great people and presentations lined up for you for 2008.
If our meetings aren't enough, remember you can get your full doses of
presentations and hands-on at the SharePoint Conference in Seattle and
the Office System Developer Conference in San Jose (btw, did you know
you can get to San Jose very cheap by booking a return flight to Hawaii
and hopping over to mainland US for a few days?). We're obviously also
getting ready for the Visual Studio 208 launch which include heaps of
good news for Office Developers using VSTO. A great opportunity for a
quick intro and overview is presented on the 22nd of January
<http://www.victoriadotnet.com.au/vic-victorianet-dev-sig-formed/vic-victorianet-dev-sig-events.aspx>
by the Victoria.net Dev SIG.
Feel free to pass this newsletter on to your clients and colleagues who
might be interested in joining our group.

Replacing OWC Reporting with Excel Services
FEATURED ARTICLE

John Campbell, a program manager who works on the Excel Services teams.

As a Program Manager on the Excel Services team, I often field emails
from people who have a thin reporting solution that is based on Office
Web Components (OWC). They would like to migrate that solution to Excel
Services, but aren't sure how or what the pitfalls are. In this entry I
will talk about what OWC functionality Excel Services can be used to
replace, some common pitfalls, and step by step instructions for putting
together a sample report that overcomes the most common OWC conversion
pitfall .

Creating a Docx Html preview Handler
FEATURED ARTICLE

Vincent Rothwell AKA TheKid.me.uk
<http://blog.thekid.me.uk/default.aspx>

The next version of .Net contains a new DLL called WindowsBase. This DLL
contains a new namespace called System.IO.Packaging which contains lots
of useful classes for manipulating Word documents in the docx format.
Essentially a .docx document is just a zip file containing a bunch of
files, mostly XML. The System.IO.Packaging namespace allows you to open
and manipulate these files. I thought I would try and use these classes
to create a HttpHandler which would allow you to preview a word document
in the docx format. This would not only need to convert the text stored
in the document, but also the images contained in the document.

Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) for Windows Server
2003 is information protection technology that works with RMS-enabled
applications to help safeguard digital information from unauthorized
use-both online and offline, inside and outside of the firewall.

RMS augments an organization's security strategy by protecting
information through persistent usage policies, which remain with the
information, no matter where it goes. Organizations can use RMS to help
prevent sensitive information-such as financial reports, product
specifications, customer data, and confidential e-mail messages-from
intentionally or accidentally getting into the wrong hands. Read more
about Rights Management here
