MS Money freezes at login

Hi, I've been using MS Money for about 4 years now and I have been using MS
Money 2007 for over a year now but suddenly it is freezing every time I try
to logon. It takes up about 97-100% of cpu which forces me to close it using
task manager. I don't know why it is suddenly acting like this.

I have tried reinstalling it with no luck. I normally synchronize my money
files with my pocket pc using sbf finance pocket version (since money no
longer offers pocket pc synchronization). Recently my pocket pc crashed so I
had to reinstall all of its programs and it seems like that is when MS Money
has stopped working.

I have tried looking for solutions on the internet with no success.
I am using Windows XP and use ZoneAlarm for my antivirus/antispam.

Please help me - before I go out and buy another product.
Thanks!

By "logon" do you mean it starts but asks for a password/WinLive ID (nee
Passport) and THEN "freezes" after you've entered one? (I wouldn't say
anything using 97% of CPU is frozen. It's trying to do SOMETHING.) If
WinLiveID, what happens if you say you want to work offline? (IIRC it offers
you that choice along the way.)

Have you tried opening the sample data file? Another data file? An old
copy/backup? Tried creating a new file without a password? We need to try to
do something to localize the problem here.

And how long do you wait before taking this drastic step? Just because it's
using lots of CPU shouldn't force you to kill it. What's the CPU got to do
that's more important?

That makes a lot of people feel better but doesn't often fix anything.

I don't know much about PocketPC and less about sbf finance. That ahving
been said, I'm not sure what the relationship would be. Have you tried your
data file against a machine with Money installed that's never been used with
that other stuff? Again, trying to narrow down the problem...

Firewall, too?

That is highly unlikely to move any of us. We just use it too.

Re: MS Money freezes at login

Hi Dick,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my query.

When I login, regardless of whether I use the online or offline services,
money still hangs or freezes. Since it uses 97% of the CPU I cannot use any
other program and sometimes I cannot even use the mouse (the cursor doesn't
appear on the screen). Just this weekend I left Money running from 6pm to
10am and still nothing changed. Since I cannot do anything else on my
computer and Money doesn't move from the login screen I have no idea what
else I can do so I force it to quit using the task manager. I can't even shut
it down from the Money window as there is no "exit" option on the login
screen.

It seems that from the moment I open Money and type in my ID and Password
that's when the problem starts.

I haven't yet tried to open Money from data file. By data file do you mean a
backup file of Money? How do I open Money from the backup file - by opening
the backup file? (Sorry for the simple question).

Your question: "Have you tried your
> data file against a machine with Money installed that's never been used with
> that other stuff? Again, trying to narrow down the problem..."

I can remove the other stuff to see if it will work without it, but in the
past year I have used the "other stuff" (activesync and sbf finance) without
any problem until now. In the past I have easily synchronized Money with my
IPAQ using those two programs.

I do have firewall (Microsoft's firewall) as well as Zone Alarm. Again,
these have never been a problem before. Once a week I do virus & spyware
scans and Zone Alarm doesn't find anything. I also use Privacy Guardian to
clear out my cache and look for more spyware and I do this ever day.

The only other thing I can think of is that I have only 1 GB of hard drive
space left on my computer and I don't have a lot of RAM and right now my
computer has about 56 programs running on it.

Any other suggestions?

-Thanks

This may well not help, but it seems worth a try:

I suggest you open any file you can, such as Sample.mny.
In XP, you can do that by going to your Money install folder
and right-clicking Sample.mny, and choosing Open.
Go to Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the
(GeneralDisplayStartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:Accoun tList.
Close Money.

Then open the problem file once or twice.

If you find that you were able to open Money that way, then go to
Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplayOptions and Remove the
Investment Performance module. If you still have a problem, remove
everything. If the problem goes away, you can add things back until
the crash does not happen. Add back in the other things you want
on the home page.

Re: MS Money freezes at login

Thanks Cal for the response.

I did as you suggested but now all I can open is the sample file. Everytime
I click on MS Money to open it, the sample file opens. I can't find any of my
data that I had entered. I'm okay with losing all my data because I'll just
add it back in again clean, but I would like to open a normal Money file
instead of the sample file everytime. At least the sample file isn't stalling
- it doesn't even ask me for a login or password which is where is usually
stalls. And the sample file doesn't take up 100% of the cpu either. Still, I
would like to open a normal word file now.

Any suggestions?

By default, Money opens the most recently used file. Three ways to
select a different file:

1. Open the *.mny file from Windows Explorer by right clicking or
left double-clicking the file.

2. With Money open, select the file from the most recently used
(MRU) list at the bottom of the file menu.

3. Use File->Open and browse to your file.

If you do make a new file with File->New->NewFile, you can choose to
not add a LiveID to the file if you don't need to do automated
download from a financial institution listed in
http://www.microsoft.com/money/bankonline.aspx

One more thing: Search your computer for *.mbf files. Save some to
other media such as a USB flash drive.

Select one (maybe the second-newest) and open it. That should launch
Money and start a restore. I would not choose to restore to the
default location, but instead browse to your Documents folder and
pick a new name. That will not overwrite an existing file.

You could also try a repair on your latest *.mny file if you have
not done so already: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466
I forget whether you said you had already done that.
