Xfers not picked up

Hello. Quick question, don't know if it's my bank or if I need to set
something up. I bank with Navy Federal and I use the advance register,
money plus (still demo version learning from quicken). I have my Navy
Federal checking account conduct a transfer automatically of an amount to
another checking account for a reserve for a mortage payment and the bank
also pulls half a car payment from my mian checking every other week.. Each
of these two "transfers" (as they show on the bank side) happen every two
weeks, the night of my automatic payroll deposit.

Money is not picking these transfers up and I have to add them manually.
Why is that and how can I set money up to show it automatically? In the
checking account where I deposit my half mortage payment every two weeks, it
shows the transfer coming in automatically, but not the transfer out when I
manually submit my mortgage payment. It seems like it reports incoming
transfers OK, but not outgoing.

Thanks.

It's your bank. The transaction file is created by your bank, and
they're just not putting those transactions in the file.

Even if they *did* put the transaction in, it would show up as two
separate transactions when loaded into Money--a withdrawal from one
account and a deposit in the other. You would have to convert one of
those transactions into a transfer, and delete the other.

OK, thanks. Any advice on how to set this up in money so it shows in the
register automatically and adjusts the balances accordingly? Thx again.

One other thing.... it shows in Quicken fine. So if it shows in quicken,
shouldn't it show on money?

Your bank may very well give you two different sets of data, depending
on whether you use background banking (data downloaded automatically)
or you download a QIF file and import it manually. If so, it's a
problem with the bank's programmers, and you can't do anything about it
except either use the other method to load data or enter the data
manually.

I'll assume you're using background banking, and that the deposit side
of your transfer gets downloaded, but not the withdrawal side.

1. Find the deposit transaction that *does* get downloaded.
Double-click that transaction to select it and open it for editing.
2. Notice that the "Deposit" tab is highlighted. This identifies the
transaction type.
3. Click the "Transfer" tab. A dialog box appears asking what you want
to do.
4. Click the "Change this to a Transfer transaction." radio button,
then click "OK".
5. The form at the bottom changes, showing "From" and "To" fields. "To"
is already filled in with the name of the current account. Select the
appropriate account for the "From" field, then click "Enter".
6. You're done.
7. If the system was downloading both halves of the transfer as a
deposit in one account and a withdrawal in the other account, you would
then have to go to the other account and delete the withdrawal
transaction. This would avoid duplication in that other account.

A transfer is really just a deposit and a withdrawal combined in one.
The advantage is that you can edit both of them at the same time, and
they're guaranteed to stay balanced with each other.

Navy Federal does not provide an OFX server, so the data is
screen-scraped by a third party.

What you can try is to change the Deposit or Withdrawal into a
Transfer when you process the first reference to the transfer. Then
watch to see if Money matches the transaction when you process the
other file.

I don't know whether this will help the op or not, but NFCU does
download QFX files, which Money (at least M2007 Deluxe) can
import. I just did a download from NFCU, added the "OFX"
extension to the saved file name, and successfully imported the
data into M2007 Deluxe.

Thank you. I did what you suggested and it worked great! On a subsequent
post, Mr. Learner suggested something along the lines of what you suggest
here, at least I think, and suggests as well to watch money to see if it
duplicates it going forward. Is money smart enough for this or is this
something I will have to do each time, albeit only twice per month, going
forward? It does make it easier, so thanks. I wish I could chase after
someone at NFCU to fix it. If they are providing a file to a third party,
you'd think that would at least want to do it right.

Background backing with Quicken worked about 50% of the time, for some
accounts and it varies. Very frustrating.

Thanks again.

Thanks. That defintely works, but NFCU doesn't make it easy as I have a
bunch of accounts and it's lots of clicking and downloading instead of doing
it as one big file.
