Re: Lost Inbox
Why it happens:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/probl...s.htm#mailgone http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx Recovering the missing data: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx (#2 and #4) and http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918069 (Notes section under Resolution) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DBXpress (faster, more powerful, with even greater functionality) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Avoiding Such Corruption in Future: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ PVR wrote: > OE offered to compact my Local Folders. Re: Lost Inbox
Why don't antivirus email scanning programs provide no additional
protection? I use Norton and the only problem I've seen is that it delays the downloading of messages. Isn't it able to catch virus-infected attachments or viruses embedded in email texts? Re: Lost Inbox
See the link I cited:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx Even Symantec says it's not necessary: <QP> Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. </QP> http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 -- ~PA Bear DaffyDŽ wrote: > Why don't antivirus email scanning programs provide no additional > protection? Re: Lost Inbox
You are lucky. E-mail scanning is not needed, and Norton and McAfee programs
are not compatible with OE. As far as e-mail scanning goes, It was first introduced by Symantec after they bought the company from Peter Norton. While it does scan e-mail, the reason it was developed was as a marketing theme to make people feel they would be safer. Nothing is farther from the truth. Turning off e-mail scanning is safe. See: Viral Irony: The Most Common Cause of Corruption. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...ion.mspx#EOAAC And: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 And this is from Symantec, but applies to all anti-virus programs. From: http://snipurl.com/bmf6 Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning? Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "DaffyDŽ" <daffyd@woohoo.com> wrote in message news:OtJredEbIHA.4344@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Why don't antivirus email scanning programs provide no additional > protection? Re: Lost Inbox
Many thanks. I Searched on *.db* and found 43 files. None of them were
recognizable as "Inbox", "Outbox", "Sent Items", etc. One file was named Mail.dbf. Is this the file I should attempt to recover? If not, what is the filenane? Again, many thanks, Peter.
