lost inbox mails during compact
Please help. I am using Outlook Express 6.0 with Windows XP.
While OE compacting my mails in inbox the computer crashed. Lost only about two years worth of incoming mails. (sent mails were 100% saved). Someone told me about recovering .bak files in recycle bin and I tried to restore the .bak files. But somehow, I did something wrong. I had no choice but to 'replace same named files with newer (about 10 minutes) date', then closed and restarted the OE...nothing happened. Could someone please help me? |

Thank you so much! But somehow didn't work.
I located inbox.bak file (inbox.bak has 112MB, and inbox.dbx has 53MB), rename it to inbox.dbx and restart Outlook Express. But, still incoming mails between Oct.06-July08 are missing from my inbox. When I tried to view those files using OE, neither of them have those missing mails, though. I guess those files were already replaced by my operation before (go to Recycle Bin and Restore inbox.bak, but the system required to replace newer dated file with exact same file name, which might erased good file by this missing file.) So, maybe this is the end of story? Did you (1) Close OE, (2) Move the original (53MB) INBOX.DBX out of your
store folder*, (3) Restore INBOX.BAK from Recycle Bin, (4) open your message store and rename INBOX.BAK (112MB) to INBOX.DBX, and then (5) open OE? * http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are marked as hidden by default. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders via Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View (cf. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial62.html). Uha! I didn't move the original inbox.dbx file out of my store folder. I just closed OE, went to Recycle Bin and restored inbox.bak then opened OE. ....that was the first operation before I posted my question in this discussion group. (I posted originally in the wrong discussion group and someone told me the right one, later) Then, with your postings, I changed to 'view hidden files', found the inbox.bak files and tried to rename it. I couldn't rename it ... said that there was the same file exist. Then, somehow, I did rename it. But, didn't work. I went to insideoe.com/files/store, created a new folder, reopened OE.
But, the result was the same. missing incoming mails for about the last 2 years. There is nothing in my recycle bin except a few deleted pictures and document. I really appreciated your help, though. 1. Close OE.
2. Open Windows Explorer to your store. 3. Make certain that you've Moved the old (53MB) INBOX.DBX to a desktop folder you've created for this purpose. 4. Rename the current (112MB) INBOX.DBX (originally INBOX.BAK that you restored from Recycle Bin) to INBOX1.DBX, then Move INBOX1.DBX to the desktop folder, too. 5. When you next open OE, you will have a new (and empty) Inbox folder and your store will contain a new INBOX.DBX (c. 55KB) file. 6. Run DBXpress on INBOX.DBX (53MB) now located in the desktop folder. Any messages recovered can be dragged to an open OE folder. NB: Do NOT drag them to the Inbox! 7. Delete INBOX.DBX (53MB) and any unwanted extracted messages (EML files) from the desktop folder (to avoid confusion). 8. Now run DBXpress on INBOX1.DBX (112MB) also located in the desktop folder. Any messages recovered can be dragged to an open OE folder. NB: Again, do NOT drag them to the Inbox! If still no joy, your messages are unrecoverable. Resolve to close adhere to the caveats I posted in my previous reply to avoid such problems in the future. You're welcome. Remember that your "bad housekeeping" caused the loss of
