Can't Import Account Settings

Running XP Home SP3
IE6
OE6.00

I just bought a new computer. Old computer had the exact same operating
system as above. Before getting rid of the old computer I backed up my OE
account settings to a removeable hard drive. The file reads:
kr@sbcglobal.net.iaf. I tried to import this file my going to:
tools/accounts/import. I then found the .iaf file and clicked "open". At
that point I get an error message: "The import did not complete because an
error occurred."

Can someone help me fix this?

On trying to import my news account settings to used the same procedure and
when I click "open" the error message reads "The import did not complete
because an account with that name already exists".

Can someone help me fix this problem? Thanks

Re: Can't Import Account Settings

1. Copy the IAF file to the desktop of your new computer.

2. Right-click | Properties | Remove any Read Only attribute.

3. Open OE Tools | Accounts | Import | point the wizard to the IAF file on
the desktop.

Re: Can't Import Account Settings

Let's get your other thread about this new machine ("Text Size in OE6")
sorted out first. Something's fishy here.

PS: You tell us in this thread that you're running IE6 but in the other
thread you stated IE7. Which is it?

Re: Can't Import Account Settings

Now that the other thread's been settled...

=> Please make sure that you did NOT attempt to import the IAF file directly
from the "removable hard drive" (see #1 below) and that you removed any Read
Only attribute the file might have (#2 below) before you attempted to import
it.

If still no joy...

1a. By any chance had you already configured the name@sbcglobal.net account
in OE on the new machine (i.e., before you attempted to import the IAF
file)?

1b. Is sbcglobal (or ATT) still your ISP and did you install any
ISP-supplied software on the new machine before you attempted to import the
IAF file?

2. OE File | Identities | Manage identities: Is the identity you're using
named Main Identity and is that the only identity listed here?

3a. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

3b. Is your anti-virus application configured to scan incoming/outgoing
mail? Was it configured to do so on the old machine?

3c. Do you have an anti-spam application installed? Was one installed on
the old machine?

Bingo! I suspect the error occurred because you'd already configured the
account manually and OE wouldn't allow a dupe.

The default Main Identity is much more prone to corruption (problems; loss
of messages) than a user-created identity. I would *strongly* recommend
that you import messages from Main Identity into the user-created identity,
and then Remove the Main Identity.

Make certain that AVG Free isn't configured to scan email.

If Spybot Tea Timer is enabled and you don't fully understand what it does
and how it does it, disable it and leave it disabled. See
