how to export/import subfolders in outlook express winxp
I recently swapped everything from one computer running winxp to another
(winxp also). I moved the address book but only the main folder was transferred, I am unable to transfer the subfolders. Microsoft suggests copying all contacts into the main folder and then transferring them but this is ludicrous. There must be a way to preserve the subfolder setup yes/no? |

Re: how to export/import subfolders in outlook express winxp
Folders neither export nor import. Some find that Groups will export and
import but YMMV. You can create one or more Standalone Address Book(s) on the other machine that contain(s) the Folder's/Folders' contacts and then Copy it to the new machine. Re: how to export/import subfolders in outlook express winxp
Sorry, I'm not a texter, what does YMMV stand for?
"Some find that Groups will export and import " is this applicable to me? I have subfolders under my main identities contacts that I want to move. I'm quoting from OEHelp "How do I back up my files and settings?" Would this allow me to transfer my subfolders? "To backup and restore OE5 and 6 messages, make a copy of all the files in the folder that contains the dbx files. Do a search for *.wab and back that up as well (address book). Also export these 4 registry keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Micro soft\Outlook Express Where GUID represents your Identity number. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name To restore the messages on a reformatted machine, or to move them to a new machine, copy all the backed-up files to the exact directory where they were located in their previous life. Then, before opening OE, import the 4 keys into the registry. If OE has already been run on the computer to which you are restoring, then delete those 4 keys from the registry (back it up first) before importing the 4 saved ones." Don't know why my previous response went to the middle of the message.
Sorry! According to a Google search, YMMV stands for "Your mileage may vary". Obviously something to do with the import/export trade or the price of gas, or am I being obtuse? YMMV is a phrase from the US EPA mileage rating for cars. There, it means that the mileage you get on your car may not match the prediction from the EPA tests. By extension, elsewhere it means "This fix may not work on your computer". Jim <snip> |

I'm not either. See http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=YMMV > "Some find that Groups will export and import " is this applicable to me? Yes, assuming you'd (1) exported the Address Book on the old machine, (2) saving it as a WAB file, and then (3) imported the WAB file on the new machine. Reading your last reply, I'm not really sure what you did or how you did it, sorry. (The procedure you cite is not without its pit-falls and can be very tricky to execute correctly.) Understand that Address Book Folders and Groups are not the same thing. -- ~PA Bear Urge wrote: > Sorry, I'm not a texter, what does YMMV stand for? > "Some find that Groups will export and import " is this applicable to me? > I have subfolders under my main identities contacts that I want to move. > I'm quoting from OEHelp "How do I back up my files and settings?" Re: how to export/import subfolders in outlook express winxp
Alright, maybe I'm an idiot. I have in my hands (well not right this
second) a floppy with my address book, including subfolders, that I was able to open up and see everything. I got this by exporting the wab file to a folder on my desktop and copying it to a floppy. I have to travel to another town to attempt to install it on it's new home. I think what I did before was transfer the wab32.dll? Maybe I moved an older version from a backup? At one point I had the old HD hooked up to the new computer and was dragging and dropping files and folders. I can't remember cause the whole process of moving from one computer to another (I started with a blank HD and installed everything i.e. XP, Office, Quickbooks etc. moved gigabytes of files, burned several dvds for backup in case I screwed up while trying to keep my wife from freaking out cause this was all the data for our business) was very stressful. As far as I can tell, everything works and these subfolders are the only thing missing. I am leaving now to drive over and attempt to install them. Thanks for the help, this made me relook at everything and hopefully get it right the second time. I will post results. YW & thanks for your feedback. Again, Folders and Groups are NOT the same
thing. Urge wrote: > Alright, maybe I'm an idiot. Re: how to export/import subfolders in outlook express winxp
Strike 2-I imported the wab file into OE but nothing changed. I still don't
have subfolders in the address book. I do however have them in a folder on the desktop so they are at least accessable. Worst case scenario- my wife has to type them into the address book. I guess I'll keep looking, there HAS to be a way...doesn't there? "Urge" <thumper_21@verizon.net> wrote in message news:OpVt$Ws4IHA.2060@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Alright, maybe I'm an idiot.
