The other day when my mom opened Outlook Express (v5), all the
messages in her Inbox were marked as read. The previous day, there had
been 60+ unread messages in the Inbox, and she didn't mark any of them
read. Any suggestions on what might've caused this to happen?

Various keystroke combinations while viewing the message list:
Alt-E,e or Ctrl-Shift-A or Ctrl-a Ctrl-Enter Etc.
