Folders in Outlook Express
Can you please tell me how many folders OE can support? I receive a lot of
email and like to archive it keeping my inbox empty. However, I've ended up with a rather large number of folders. Also, how many identities can OE support? Thanks in advance. sheana |

Re: Folders in Outlook Express
I don't believe there is a limit on how many folders you have. The concern
is not letting any one folder get to. large. I don't know of a limit of identities either, but you run into problems if you have 32+ accounts. Can send and receive messages in only 32 POP3 accounts in Outlook Express 6: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296513 General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. Re: Folders in Outlook Express
In theory, the number of folders is unlimited. (I have well over 50 of 'em,
not including newsgroups.) sheana wrote: > Can you please tell me how many folders OE can support? I receive a lot of > email and like to archive it keeping my inbox empty. Re: Folders in Outlook Express
Bruce,
In OE I went to Tools--->Option-->Maintenance and there was nothing in regards to "compact messages in the background". I have Win XP media home edition. I could swear I've seen this choice to stop automatic compacting, but it's not there. Here is what's on my Maintenance tab: Cleaning Up Messages: 1.Empty messages from the "deleted items" folder on exit 2.Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folders When compacting messages" 1. Delete read message bodies in newgroups 2.Delete news messages 5 days after being downloaded (This was checked but I unchecked it.) Kindly advise. Thanks in advance. Re: Folders in Outlook Express
You missed this in regards to Background Compacting: {N/A if running
XP/SP2}. XP prompts you to compact after 100 closings instead. We all advise to let it compact, or better yet, get in the habit of doing it manually about once a week and you will never see the prompt. Why does OE insist on compacting folders when I close it?: http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/why.htm#compact About File Corruption: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE functioning well and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. When you delete, or move messages, the space they had used remains until you compact. ***Never touch anything until the compacting is finished.*** See: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2 With SP2, automatic background compacting was removed due to problems it caused. Now you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which you should do, and don't touch anything until it has finished. If you compact manually, at your convenience, this will also set the counter back to zero. See this for more information: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact Let me know if I can help more. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "sheana" <sheana@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0FE27A3A-305A-4646-86BF-ABEE83E96548@microsoft.com... > Bruce, > > In OE I went to Tools--->Option-->Maintenance and there was nothing in > regards to "compact messages in the background".
