Can't view or post to Usenet newsgroups
For no apparent reason, I am suddenly unable to post or read Usenet
newsgroups using Outlook Express 6. Yet I am able to post and read Usenet using Thunderbird in Fedora 6. My .dbx files don't seem too big. But I deleted several old ones, not sure that was wise. Clicking on a newsgroup causes a dialog box asking for my userid and password at my ISP. Entering them just causes the dialog box to repeat. There is no error code that I can see. The symptom appears to be the ISP's nntp server is down, but that can't be true because I am able to use the ISP's nntp server under Thunderbird. I deleted my OE 6 account, and recreated it, with no effect. Any suggestions? |

Make OE the default e-mail client:

Re: Can't view or post to Usenet newsgroups
I looked but I don't see how this is my problem.
I use OE strictly for Usenet, and Outlook for email, calendar, tasks, contacts, etc. I'm not having a mail problem, but a posting problem. I realize nntp is not that different from smtp and pop3 but there is a difference. There was a hint in your references to the registry. Perhaps something went wrong there. BTW, I am able to use OE for Usenet on msnew.microsoft.com. If this reply post goes thru, that might help narrow the problem down to OE versus my ISP. Let's not stop here. I'm open to any and all suggestions. Oops! I sent the wrong canned reply.

Re: Can't view or post to Usenet newsgroups
Does your ISP require to to logon to the news server? Some do, many
don't. Look at Tools, Accounts, News, Properties, Server. Uncheck the box "This server requires me to logon" and try again. If you still have problems, try setting up a news account in OE for the Microsoft news server. To set up an account for MSnews in OE http://www.insideoe.com/resources/co...tm#setupmsnews If that works, then the issue is likely that you don't have the correct account settings for your ISP's news server. If the Microsoft news server also fails, then it could be that your firewall is selectively blocking port 119 for OE but not other news programs. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Harry Thompson" <me@privacy.net> wrote in message news:9CHfk.476$eE4.278@newsfe09.iad... > For no apparent reason, I am suddenly unable to post or read Usenet > newsgroups using Outlook Express 6. > > Yet I am able to post and read Usenet using Thunderbird in Fedora 6. > > My .dbx files don't seem too big. Thanks, folks. None of the suggestions seem to work. Using OE I have no trouble with msnews. I thought it might be a corrupted registry, but I have the same problem on a different PC that I seldom use anymore. It's hard to believe that both registries would get corrupted in the same way at the same time. This is a very sudden problem. Early in the morning OE worked as expected, and later the same day, it didn't. I'm left with the suspicion that it is some sort of interplay between my ISP and OE. The help desk at my ISP doesn't have anybody anymore who has even heard of Usenet. So, for the time being I'm giving up. I installed Thunderbird 2 on XP, and it works fine with any nntp server, including my ISP's. I'll check back in this ng from time to time in case there is another suggestion. |

Re: Can't view or post to Usenet newsgroups
You may want to create an NNTP log which will show more details about
the communications between Outlook Express and your news server. Select Tools, Options, Maintenance, Troubleshooting, News. Then access the news server. The log will be created in the same folder with your DBX files (see Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder). The file will have the name of the news server with a .LOG file extension. You may need to close OE after accessing the news server for the log to get written to disk. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Harry Thompson" <me@privacy.net> wrote in message news:eyVpdLN6IHA.3856@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Michael Santovec wrote: >> Does your ISP require to to logon to the news server?
