dummy email addresses for newsgroups

Hello. I used a summy email address when I signed up for the Microsoft
newsgroups. I did that on the suggestion of someone, who asserted that my
email could be harvested by spamers. My question is: Is there any advantage
to using a real email address? The only one I can think of is for receiving
emails directly as opposed to a person's responding to the group. If I were
to use my true email address, would there be any way to prevent it from
being harvested by spammers?

Thank you.

Trust me: You do not want to receive emails directly from someone reading
this or any other newsgroup!

OK, I get it now. I was misreading a passage that I pulled of the web.
