I can't open attachments in OE
I'm using XP and either after uninstalling Nortons or using a program
to repair and improve the Registry, I find I am unable to open large attachments. It may also have happened when I installed IOLO virus protection. What I get is a message "command failed to execute". Sometimes OE goes into a "Not responding" condition and I have to shut it down. I have plenty of free hard drive space and allow attachments in the Options. I believe it thinks that I am out of space when I'm not. I installed Mozilla Thunderbird and it has no problem with the same attachments that makes OE crash. I would prefer using OE because I have more than one computer on the network. The others use OE and can open the same attachments with no problem. I have also uninstalled Norton on them so that's probably not the cause. The Iolo software or Registry Booster 2 may be the culprit. Anyone have a constructive idea? |

Re: I can't open attachments in OE
What happens when you try to send? Any error message? Post it in its
entirety. Norton is one of the worst programs you can have when using Outlook Express. Run this tool. The so-called registry repair tools are also like shooting yourself in the foot. And a *Registry Booster*? Get that crap off your machine. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 Symantec uninstaller may not finish the job: http://windowssecrets.com/comp/080207#story1 Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Note that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in Custom Mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when the option arises. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. Re: I can't open attachments in OE
Can you save the attachments (e.g. File, Save Attachments)?
If so, the problem may be the Temporary Internet Files which OE uses when you open an attachment from within OE. Try Clearing the IE Temporary Internet Files (TIF). In IE: Tools, Internet Options, General, TIF Delete Files. Be sure to check the Delete All Offline Content in the pop-up. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm <maxi-1105@usa.net> wrote in message news:1d0bb085-a8a0-473a-b240-f14536879853@l64g2000hse.googlegroups.com... > I'm using XP and either after uninstalling Nortons or using a program > to repair and improve the Registry, I find I am unable to open large > attachments. Think your Registry needs "cleaning" or "repairing"? Read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions. 3. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place. - Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection, and even <spit> Symantec says it's not necessary: <QP> Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. </QP> http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ |

Since I had a long post and there is an equally long response let me address each item as I see them. With regard to sending large attachments: EO goes into a "Not responding state". Removing Nortons: I have previously used the manual approach to remove Nortons following the "Dave Taylor" steps to delete programs and registry entries. The only step I had not done before is to download and run CCleaner. Reduntant Virus checking: This is a new one for me. I will have to check into it further. General precautions for Outlook Express: I have OE setup to delete all emails from the Delete folder upon exit and exit every day. The Delete folder never gets very large. My Input folder usually has no more than 10-20 emails in it. I either delete items I have read or move them to my own folders. I have checked the size of my folders and none of them exceed 4mb. The default folders are kept at a minimum with the largest being the Sent folder at 15MB. I'm not sure I ever backup my files often enough, but I do run a periodic backup and even store a copy off-site. After doing all of the above I tried to open an attachment of 665 KB. Again the "Not responding" condition. I turned off all virus protection (Avast) and tried to open the 665 KB attachment again. This time I received the "Command Failed to Execute" message. I have tried to save the attachments and EO went "Not responding." I tried this several times. If I wait long enough the message I get either "Command Failed to execute" or "Save Attachments: 'There was an error saving one or more of the attachments. Please check your free disk space and try again.'" Different messages trying to save the same attachment. The attachment name appears in the folder to which I was trying to save it, but with a zero length. |

OE has to encode attachments before sending them. This adds about 40% to their size and also takes some time. During this process OE may appear to be non-responsive and even be reported as such, because it won't respond until it finishes. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM Do not reply with email |
