Identifying Identities

In folder "\Local Settings\Applications Data\Identities" I have
thirteen folders each called by a different long number.

One of these folders was my current store location, which I have now
moved to another location (its subfolder "\Microsoft\Outlook Express"
is now empty).

Two of the remaining folders also have empty subfolders.

Some of the remaining ten non-empty folders are identities I was using
prior to a recent crash.

Is there any way I can link OE into each of these non-empty locations
in turn to see what they are?

Is there any way I can reinstate those identities I was using prior to the
crash?

(The links provided by PA Bear in a recent conversation look like
they're written for people who already understand the system
-- i.e. not written for a dimwit like me.)

Re: Identifying Identities

Perhaps the easiest way would be to create a new identity in OE. Then
do a File, Import, Messages, OE6, and select from Store Folder (rather
than the default from Identity) and select one of the the folders. Then
see what gets imported.

Re: Identifying Identities

1. OE File | Identities | Manage identities: How many identities are listed
here and what are their names? What is the name of your current identity
(i.e., the one that's highlighted by default)?

2a. START | RUN | (type in) WAB /A (note the space) | OK

2b. View | Folders and groups (select/check)

2c. Look in the left-hand pane: Without expanding any of the folders, how
many are listed and what are their names (e.g., Andy's Contacts)?

2d. Now select (highlight) each folder in turn: Do any of them display any
contacts in the right-hand pane? If so, which foldername(s)?

Re: Identifying Identities

Thanks for your feedback. If you want to leave those empty or
no-longer-valid folders on your system, so be it.

It's not that I *want* to do that, but rather that I don't understand
what's going on here. No offense intended.
(I wanted access to my lost files and now I seem to have it.
What other consequences I might be suffering is over my head.)
So anyway... I take it that I now have to get rid of these empty folders:--

I now have three identities in OE:

1. Main Identity (current identity)
2. breaker14 (alternate identity linked to different email address)
3. new (recovered files from old identity)

breaker14's contacts (four contacts)
friendsreunited's contacts (two contacts)
Main Identity's contacts (loadsa contacts)
Newsgroups's contacts

Don't worry about it, Andy.
