One Microsoft public newsgroup delivers only some messages
Apologies if the following is a FAQ -- I'm a newbie in this group.
I've spent my microsoft.public time in the WindowsXP groups up to now. Exactly one of them, microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics, consistently delivers to me less than all the headers. For example, some minutes ago there were 22 new messages, but only seven headers actually appeared for me to look at. I can't find anything different about how I subscribe to this one newsgroup, compared to all the others, Microsoft or not. I'd appreciate any pointers to where I should look for something to change to make that one newsgroup behave like the rest. Thanks. (Outlook Express 6; fully updated WinXP Media Centre Edition with SP3; Sony VAIO desktop, two years old; mail via imap.telus.net, newsgroups from cnews.corel.com, msnews.microsoft.com, news.giganews.com) |

Re: One Microsoft public newsgroup delivers only some messages
While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and
Group Messages By Conversation are checked. Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File | Reset. Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages will be downloaded again. Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the group, or server at the top and then Reset. It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: " Include this account...........". -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Anthony Buckland" <anthonybucklandnospam@telus.net> wrote in message news:us7Fvx06IHA.1080@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Apologies if the following is a FAQ -- I'm a newbie in this group. > I've spent my microsoft.public time in the WindowsXP groups up > to now. Re: One Microsoft public newsgroup delivers only some messages
Right-click on the newsgroup in Folders pane | Local file (tab) | Reset the
newsgroup | Hit the F5 key | Mark all messages as Read (CTRL+SHIFT+A): Do you still see 15 "ghosts"? Thanks. After reset, the microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics group had 2759 messages. 2741 headers downloaded, 18 did not download. I'm not sure what you mean by seeing ghosts, the headers all became "read" after the Ctrl-Shift-A. Mind you, I didn't count them Then I deleted the headers, leaving that pane blank andthe message count in the Folders pane still 18. The corresponding headers didn't appear after switching to another group and back again. In short, no joy. |

I didn't expect those steps to fix anything, just to reproduce the behavior (which it did). The "ghosts" are the supposedly missing messages. Now, if you right-click on the newsgroup in folders pane again, select CATCH UP, leave that newsgroup then return to it, do the 18 "ghosts" return? Assuming they do, see Frank's last reply. |

Assuming they do, see Frank's last reply. .... Right you are, I hadn't tried that one before. They go away on Catch Up, then come back the next time the group is visited. And it appears I need do nothing, since there aren't actual messages I'm missing. Thanks to both of you for the fast help. |
