Re: XP SP3 or KB951978 problems
If you want to "break" Outlook Express and put up with contant nags to
compact your files (and run the risk of losing all your messages if Automatic Compacting takes place), do so. Just don't complain about it if and when it happens. -- ~PA Bear Marcus wrote: > Why should I not have Mailwasher Pro running under SP3, paid for it & does > a > great job cutting out spam, have had it for good few years now without > issues until these very recent. Re: XP SP3 or KB951978 problems
I have never mentioned the compacting thing, but have had this compacting
request also for about a week now, so guess XP3 causes that? I have said no ever time asked. Does SP3 offer the protection that stopping ZA in/out scans I assume does. Can I use Mailwasher Pro if I do not ask it to start up with Windows as does now. Re my OE messages, I have them stored on a partition on my HD, one each for my 3 identities, named as OE Store. Why has Microsoft issue SP3 for XP if aware causes so many issues? Re: XP SP3 or KB951978 problems
Just looked at the google messages stuff.
When I downloaded SP3 I will have had ZA running and this has the virus, spy checking & firewall elements. Did have Windows Live on my pc but never used it since installed so have just taken all of it off my pc. Should I do a system restore prior to SP3 and then do an update serch for SP3 and then close down ZA when it downloads, how safe is this when on broadband? May that get around the issue of compacting and the stopped responding. Re: XP SP3 or KB951978 problems
> I have never mentioned the compacting thing, but have had this compacting
> request also for about a week now, so guess XP3 causes that? I have said > no > ever time asked. My CrystalBall© is all knowing, all seeing! <booga-booga-booga> Realize that when you say No to the prompt, Automatic Compacting takes places anyway! If OE was working properly in WinXP SP3: 1. You should only see that prompt if you haven't compacted all OE folders manually at least once the last 100 times you opened OE; and 2. Saying No to the prompt should have the effect of you not seeing the prompt again (i.e., Automatic Compacting will take place without you being aware of it...which could lead to loss of all of your messages). > Does SP3 offer the protection that stopping ZA in/out scans I assume does. No, but the regular real-time protection afforded by ZAISS protects you anyway. Email Scanning is redundant, additional protection that can cause all sorts of problems in OE (including loss of messages). > Can I use Mailwasher Pro if I do not ask it to start up with Windows as > does > now. No. Again, we /suspect/ that Mailwasher is the reason you're seeing the contact prompts about compacting (see above). I /strongly/ recommend that you uninstall Mailwasher. > Re my OE messages, I have them stored on a partition on my HD, one each > for > my 3 identities, named as OE Store. That doesn't matter a bit. > Why has Microsoft issue SP3 for XP if aware causes so many issues? I dunno about "so many issues" but I can tell you that all OE development ceased in June 2006* and none of OE's well known-issues (let alone issues in WinXP SP3) will NEVER be addressed. So I guess you could say MS doesn't care if third-party applications or even some of MS's other applications (e.g., Windows Desktop Search; Windows Live Mail; OneCare) cause problems in OE. PS: Yeah, I think that sucks eggs, too. If WinXP SP3 is going to be supported through 2010 (and beyond, in some cases), why isn't its default Mail Client still going to be supported? ============================== * Adding insult to injury, all further development for WIndows Mail (the default Mail Client in Vista) also ceased in June 2006...and Vista was still in beta then! -- ~PA Bear Marcus wrote: > I have never mentioned the compacting thing, but have had this compacting > request also for about a week now, so guess XP3 causes that? Patience, please. See my reply to your last post.
At this point, I would NOT do anything else unless uninstalling Mailwasher Pro doesn't resolve your OE issues. -- ~PA Bear Marcus wrote: > Just looked at the google messages stuff. > > When I downloaded SP3 I will have had ZA running and this has the virus, > spy > checking & firewall elements. > > Did have Windows Live on my pc but never used it since installed so have > just taken all of it off my pc. > > Should I do a system restore prior to SP3 and then do an update serch for > SP3 and then close down ZA when it downloads, how safe is this when on > broadband? > > May that get around the issue of compacting and the stopped responding. > > Marcus > > "Marcus" wrote: > >> I have never mentioned the compacting thing, but have had this compacting >> request also for about a week now, so guess XP3 causes that? I'm one that hasn't had problems with SP3 on my machine XP Home, I have
Mailwasher Pro installed and running but I don't use Outlook Express, instead I've been using Windows Live Mail since before SP3 and I don't have Zone Alarm but use instead Online Armor. <g> -- Joan Archer http://www.freewebs.com/crossstitcher http://lachsoft.com/photogallery "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <PABearMVP@gmail.com> wrote in message news:uHhlRx16IHA.1460@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Patience, please.
