OE doen no longer ask to be default mail client
Hi,
For one application I need to use Outlook for including a mail in that application. For my normal work I prefer Outlook Express as my mail/news client. It seems Microsoft canger something in Outlook Express a (long) while ago where after each Microsoft Update round it will force Outlook to be the default mail client no matter which client has been made the default in the past. So every month I have to tell Windows I still want to use OE and not Outlook. Normally OE asks me whether I want it to be the default mail client on startup but.... it seems I must have disabled that feature somewhere in that past few months. I've pretty much looked everywhere in OE and in the registry to see where this setting is but so far no luck. Who can tell me how I can get this prompt back? Of course I can still set OE as my default mailclient but I'd like the prompt back as that alerts me that OE is no longer the default. Bonno |

Re: OE doen no longer ask to be default mail client
See:
Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft Outlook http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#13 [Related: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933450] MS is not going to change this behavior. All development on OE (and Windows Mail in Vista) ceased in June 2006. There will never be such a prompt. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Bonno Bloksma wrote: > Hi, > > For one application I need to use Outlook for including a mail in that > application. Yes, both machines are. Both use Microsoft Update and are fully patched. It is a standard prompt for OE and there is a checkbox to mark and I must have marked it somewhere in the past. I even remember at the time whether I acidentaly did mark it and now I'm pretty sure I did. ;-) Bonno |

Always disclose your OS when you need help. ; ) FWIW in XP I would experiment with Set Program Access and Defaults in Add or Remove Programs. E.g. via Run... control appwiz.cpl > > Of course I can still set OE as my default mailclient but I'd like the > prompt back as that alerts me that OE is no longer the default. Then, in that dialog it would be relevant to know what you see under: Choose a default e-mail program: I don't particularly want to do the test myself but what I would try in your situation is seeing if all the products listed there could be checked Enable access to this program simultaneously. I suspect that would provide a chance for each of those programs having to stop and ask, if you really wouldn't rather have it exclusively as the default e-mail client... ; ) Good luck Robert Aldwinckle ---- |

Re: OE doen no longer ask to be default mail client
As long as you have Outlook installed, any updates will steal the default
from OE. If you have MS Outlook installed, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#13 If you accidentally checked a "Do not show this again" box in OE and want it back, do the following. Navigate to this key: Start | Run and type in: regedit OK | HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Identities | GUID (Long series of letters & numbers) | Software | Microsoft | Outlook Express | 5.0 | Don't Show Dialogs. Find the correct one in the right hand pane and delete it, or change the value to 0, (zero). -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Bonno Bloksma" <bbloksma@xs4all.nl> wrote in message news:48b24b99$0$196$e4fe514c@news.xs4all.nl... > Hi, > >>> But what I was interested in is..... >>> >>>>> Normally OE asks me whether I want it to be the default mail client on >>>>> startup but.... it seems I must have disabled that feature somewhere >>>>> in >>>>> the >>>>> past few months. That is how this thread started. You gave someone else that advise about an other OE prompt so I went to that key and tried to find which was the prompt for that feature I wanted. ;-) At home OE does ask me, at work it doesn't. At both machines I have: Reply to News Warning value 6 Send News Warning value 1 Unsubscribe warning value 1 At home I also have Digital Signature Help value 1 None of them seem to be related to the OE prompt at startup to check is OE is still the default mail client. :-( > -- > > Bruce Hagen > MS-MVP Outlook Express > Imperial Beach, CA > > > "Bonno Bloksma" <bbloksma@xs4all.nl> wrote in message > news:48b24b99$0$196$e4fe514c@news.xs4all.nl... >> Hi, >> >>>> But what I was interested in is..... >>>> >>>>>> Normally OE asks me whether I want it to be the default mail client >>>>>> on >>>>>> startup but.... it seems I must have disabled that feature somewhere >>>>>> in >>>>>> the >>>>>> past few months.
