Qmail handing on message
For some reason, my sync of NNTP is hanging in the alt.os.linux.ubuntu
newsgroup. As depending on how I started the sync, the offending message seems to be either 317,069 or 72,043. I've tried emptying the directory on my pocket pc, and everything from the menu that remotely looks like it might be a method of getting past a certain message. Is there a way to "tell" Qmail to show everything on the server as read or to bypass one message? Maybe I should add that all my other newsgroups are functioning normally and I also tried deleting and then re subscribing to alt.os.linux.ubuntu and that had no effect. Thanks, Tim |

That happens to me on QMail once in a blue moon. I assume the program is choking on SOMETHING it doesn't like in a message. The fix is cumbersome, but easy enough. First, exit out of QMail, if it's still running. Then, using the freeware file exploring program Total Commander (because the PPC can't natively edit .xml files, but TC can!) navigate to where ever the QMail mail/news/etc. data files are stored (on my device, it's \Storage Card\My Documents\QMail, but it's a user setting you entered when you first ran QMail.) Inside that folder, go into the "Accounts" folder, then the folder named after your NNTP account. In that folder you'll see a file called "LastID.xml" Highlight it in TC (single tap rather than double) then tap the little notepad icon at the bottom of the screen to edit it. You'll see a bunch of text lines with the names of your various subscribed groups followed by a number- that number is the last message QMail downloaded, and it uses that to know which message it needs to grab first next time. Simply change the number to a higher one to skip the offending message. So, you're probably going to see: <lastId name="alt.os.linux.ubuntu">317068</lastId> (or maybe 72042- it's hard to tell if QMail is displaying the ID for the last group or the next when it hangs!) Just increment it up a post or two, say, to 317070, and then hit File/Save, exit out of Total Commander, then rerun QMail and try syncing again. Everything should be fine after that. Then go to your desktop and try to figure out what message it was- when it happened to me the "stuck" messages were spam with broken imbedded images/links or other such non-text nonsense. Good Luck! |
