How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

I have a Toshiba e755 (PPC 2003) that does everything I want, but is
suddenly starting to shut down without warning, sometimes every couple of
minutes or less. It then takes several button clicks to turn it back on.
Apart from that it does everything I want it do until I can get a phone that
I can use handwriting recognition on, then I'll replace it. I know someone
with an unused Toshiba e755, willing to sell it to me.
My question is: To transfer everyting from my PPC to his, do I just do a
hard reset on his, then restore from my backup on the memory card? Or will
I have to use ActiveSync in some fashion? Or will I have to reinstall
program I have purchased over the years?
And for the future - If I find the right phone, how will I transfer
programs, data, etc? I sync to an XP machine now, but have a Vista PC I am
building which I will eventually sync to.

Since the machines are identical (be worth checking Start>settings>system
tab>"about" to be sure) could you not simply install sbp backup on both and
then do a total system backup on the old one and a total system restore on
the new.

Haven't tried this so check out the suggestion thoroughly first. Roger

Re: How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

I suspect the symptoms relate to the battery failing... one way to check
this is to use the device hooked up to the ac or 12v adapter... if the
problems disappear, time for a new battery.

Depending on your (or a friend's) tech skills, consider backing up the
registry. It's relatively easy to find and export the registry entries
for specific programs and build an import file which will preserve
program settings when you switch to a new device and import them.

Same thing with the files... turn on hidden and system files in file
explorer and make backups of your main memory for future use. If you
switch card types, remember to do the same when copying files from one
card format to the other.

Hope this Helps

And if the OS is not the exact same version, down to the decimal point?
Will it use what I have, or what he has, or just make a royal mess and an
unstable machine? I don't want to buy it if it isn't going to work
properly.
I am hoping that by asking in this forum that I am "checking out the
suggestion thoroughly first"!

If the firmware version & the language is the same, then, you can safely
backup / restore your stuff. It's only with the Wi-Fi MAC address that you
might want to re-enter in the Registry.

Re: How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

So the backup and restore isn't going to preserve registry settings, and
there are hidden and system files I am not backing up?
I thought the whole backup routine was in case the battery died and
everything was lost except the OS, a situation I've never had to test.
Do I have to tweak the Backup utility to back up the registy and hidden and
system files?

Re: How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

All notable, tested backup apps (only some lame ones like IBE Backup fail at
this) backs up everything, including system databases. See my Backup Bible
for a very thorough explanation.

Re: How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

In general, backup programs will refuse to restore the registry to a
different device since doing so has the potential to corrupt device
specific entries.

This is true not only for os changes, but even for different devices
running exactly the same windows os version as each device type runs a
device specific os build.

In addition, such a restore also perpetuates any bad, corrupt or problem
entries... trust me, it's better to go through a clean install on any
new device including installing the programs... if you can, I do
recommend restoring individual program setting keys.

A couple of extra thoughts on this at <http://bevhoward.com/PPCBak.htm>

Re: How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

To avoid Werner's wrath, ;-) I'll qualify my response to say that the
backup programs I have experience with (I use an older version of
sprint) do not restore registry entries.

Re: How do I transfer my PPC programs and data to an identical PPC?

IIRC, in the Registry / WinCE DB's, it's only the Wi-Fi MAC address that is
unique. For example, CPUID (which is also device-specific) isn't stored
anywhere.
