How do I transfer from old pda and XP to a new cell/pda and Vista?
After looking into getting an identical model of pda to make mine last a
while longer I found out that the new cell phones have the same Mobile 6 software as the pdas, so will be getting one of these. Right now I have a pda running Pocket PC 2003, syncing with an older version of ActiveSync to a Windows XP computer. The new cell phone will have Mobile 6 and I have a Vista PC now. I haven't set up ActiveSync as I haven't bought the phone yet. What is the best method to get the contents of my old pda onto the new cell phone? Both PCs are on the same network if that makes a difference, and can see each other's files. Outlook uses different accounts on the 2 PCs also. Mich |

Might want to dwell on the differences between "Windows Mobile" devices a bit before making a purchase... the primary difference is "smartphone" vs "pocketpc phone" the latter having stylus input plus many more available third party applications and capabilities even though they both show to be "WinMobile 6.x" devices. For your PIM data, the key is going to be the outlook version... sync and make a _safe_ backup of the entire outlook pst file, then copy that file to the Vista machine and import it into your outlook install there. For the rest of the data, if you are file syncing, everything in main memory under your ppc's main memory "my documents" folder should be in your XP sync folder... back up that entire folder. After your first sync on the new pc, if you select "files" as a sync option, a new sync folder will be created on the new pc... copy the _contents_ of the backed up old sync folder to the new, sync again and your ppc will have everything in my documents. Notes... Anything in main memory outside of my documents will not be in the sync folder... you can manually copy other folders to your pc or memory card. "smartphones" have been limited with respect to "files" so, there may be issues to overcome here. It's best to plan on reinstalling your applications... not sure how many will be wm6 compatible. Hope others will chime in. Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |

Re: How do I transfer from old pda and XP to a new cell/pda and Vista?
The phones I am looking at use a stylus and have transcriber capabilities,
and seem to have most of the features of my PDA. I don't sync my email, but do everything else: notes, tasks, contacts, calendar and documents. From your reply it seems that the key is backing up onto XP then copying to whatever new folder was created on Vista, then reinstalling my applications. I'll let you know how it goes. Alternatively he could transfer his PIM data from one PDA to the other with dotfred's PIM Backup or other backup software, then sync the new PPC with the Vista PC, but I like your solution better. In my case I use a Funambol SyncML server (with an Outlook plug in) to keep a few PCs and phones in sync, so it's easy for me to Bring a new device or PC on line- just download the plug-in, enter the settings and sync. It's sort of a "poor man's Exchange Server." |

I'll add that, at least for me, backing up the pst file is the neatest, and simplest way to back up PIM data. Something I try to do often. ----------------------------------------- To reply to me, remove the underscores (_) from my email address (and please indicate which newsgroup and message). Robert E.
