How to backup/restore/clone an Axim X51v?
PDA #1 Axim X51v Rom A12
PDA #2 Axim X51v Rom A12 Active Sync NOT USED Desktop Computer NOT USED Backup/transfer Medium SD card. I have one (base) X51v that I use for normal stuff. I have a second one (scratch) that I use for messing around with freeware etc. I want to periodically clone the base unit to the scratch unit and start over from a known state. I use the internal backup program to backup the base system to the SD card. I hard reset the scratch machine and restore from the SD card. This works mostly. I have to change the DeviceID if I want to use them both at the same time on the network, but this isn't usually an issue. But the wireless encryption code is not restored, so I have to go look it up and type it in. And email accounts are not created. I have to manually recreate the accounts and, again, go look up all the data and type it in. I don't save email, so I don't care if the mail is there. But I do care that I can't check email without recreating the accounts manually. I googled for hours. I took a quick look at PIM backup, but it says right in the release notes that it won't restore accounts. I haven't tried restoring to the same machine, but I'm expecting the same result. The internal backup application says (backup all data) but doesn't seem to be doing that. What am I doing wrong? Yes, I checked all the boxes int he backup app. Is there a freeware way to clone a system that's not more work than typing in the stuff that's missing? I won't put activebloat er sync on my main machine and dragging the cradle off to the scratch machine is more work than recreating the accounts. Suggestions? Thanks, mike -- Return address is VALID! |

The built-in backup utility sucks. Try to do the same with, say, Spb or
Sprite Backup. See my Backup Bible for more info. -- -- Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen - Microsoft MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices Please see the Pocket PC Mag Expert Blog (including mine) at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ - you will definitely like it. Mike,
Have you looked at Sprite Backup? I believe it will do what you need. http://www.spritesoftware.com/store/...n=HMP-Icon-Ad1 Regards, -- Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com! http://www.clintonfitch.com "mike" <spamme9@gmail.com> wrote in message news:YKCSi.2193$vw2.1807@trnddc01... > PDA #1 Axim X51v Rom A12 > PDA #2 Axim X51v Rom A12 > Active Sync NOT USED > Desktop Computer NOT USED > Backup/transfer Medium SD card. > > I have one (base) X51v that I use for normal stuff. > I have a second one (scratch) that I use for messing around with > freeware etc. > I want to periodically clone the base unit to the scratch unit > and start over from a known state. > > I use the internal backup program to backup the base system to the SD > card. > I hard reset the scratch machine and restore from the SD card. > This works mostly. > I have to change the DeviceID if I want to use them both at the same > time on the network, but this isn't usually an issue. > > But the wireless encryption code is not restored, so I have to go look > it up and type it in. > > And email accounts are not created. Re: How to backup/restore/clone an Axim X51v?
I've used Sprite backup in the past to swap mine and my Wife's X50's. She
had complained hers was acting up and I wanted to determine if it was some program, the hardware, or her. Just backed up each to the flash and restored to the other device. Everything transferred fine, so that should work for you. FWIW, it turns out her digitizer was acting up and Dell replaced the unit. -- Sven MS MVP Mobile Devices "Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices" <management@no.spam.thanks.clintonfitch.com> wrote in message news:uXu1hc9EIHA.3548@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Mike, > > Have you looked at Sprite Backup? When I cloned my X51v, the email accounts were missing. But when I ran PIMbackup on it, The running log claimed to be backing up the non-existent accounts. So, the data gets restored, but the linkage into Outlook doesn't. Restoring the PIMbackup didn't help. -- Return address is VALID! |

I tried sprite, no cab, install on pc gives errors. Suspect I could fix it by installing more MSI bloatware, but the program just complains about missing files and directs me to edit the registry...bad form... SPB seems to backup, but if I have to buy two licenses...well...that ain't gonna happen. If I stick to freeware with cab files, it's less hassle to reinstall everything than to back it up.
