Ungroup .cgm image to MS Drawing object
I suspect I won't get much sympathy here, given previous comments about cgms
and the dark ages, but here goes... In Powerpoint 2003 I was able to insert cgm images into the slide and then ungroup to a MS office drawing object, then some judicious changes in line weight and regrouping gave me a high quality, detailed image. A bit slow when image sizes got larger than a 2-3 Mb but really a pretty good outcome. Now using 2007, I can still insert the image but it will not ungroup. The cgm in raw form in the slide is unusable - really bad resolution. Would the 2003 filter referred to elsewhere work with 2007 and how would I load it? Is there any other MS solution or do I have to go third party? By the way, cgm is still a standard format in use in the oil industry - no jokes about "fossil" fuels please.. -- Thanks, Hugh |

Re: Ungroup .cgm image to MS Drawing object
I don't have a good answer for you (but at least I don't have any bad jokes,
lol). There are a few things in PPT 2007 that don't ungroup well. Charts and tables, for example. The workaround is to copy them and Paste Special (on the Home tab) as EMF, then ungroup. I don't know that that will work for a CGM, though. Tossing it out just in case. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://tinyurl.com/36grcd PowerPoint 2007 Complete Makeover Kit http://tinyurl.com/32a7nx "Hughmn" <Hughmn@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:71E8AA9C-6727-4028-89ED-8B100F07DD57@microsoft.com... >I suspect I won't get much sympathy here, given previous comments about >cgms > and the dark ages, but here goes... > > In Powerpoint 2003 I was able to insert cgm images into the slide and then > ungroup to a MS office drawing object, then some judicious changes in line > weight and regrouping gave me a high quality, detailed image. Re: Ungroup .cgm image to MS Drawing object
Thanks Echo, good idea - it almost worked. Pasting as .wmf allowed me to
ungroup the image but only half the data was preserved (must be some sort of layering of the image: only one layer ungrouped, the other/s were lost). The ..emf would not ungroup, nor would the MS Office graphic object. Hugh "Echo S" wrote: > I don't have a good answer for you (but at least I don't have any bad jokes, > lol). Nuts.
Hopefully someone else will have ideas about the images themselves or the filter. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://tinyurl.com/36grcd PowerPoint 2007 Complete Makeover Kit http://tinyurl.com/32a7nx "Hughmn" <Hughmn@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:31DAB034-15BA-4D76-A789-C8B7C238FD15@microsoft.com... > Thanks Echo, good idea - it almost worked. If so, email to steve at-sign pptools dot com with this post in the body of the email and the example CGM attached. You need to include this message in the body of the email because anyone old enough to remember how to use CGMs is too old to remember in five minutes that there was a CGM question on the newsgroup. ;-) Actually, I'm pretty sure I've seen some of the types of images you're talking about, and in CGM format at that. > > In Powerpoint 2003 I was able to insert cgm images into the slide and then > ungroup to a MS office drawing object, then some judicious changes in line > weight and regrouping gave me a high quality, detailed image. Re: Ungroup .cgm image to MS Drawing object
Looks like size matters here. To create an easily mailable, non-proprietary
image I cut down the amount of information displayed and then checked for the same problem in ppt - the image ungrouped no problem! After trying a few more with varying sizes, I think the limit is somewhere over 1Mb file size - I used to deal with files this size without problem. Do you want me to send a 1.7Mb file which won't ungroup or a more easily mailable one (0.7Mb) which will? Or do I just put up with pasting in several pieces? -- Thanks, Hugh "Steve Rindsberg" wrote: > In article <71E8AA9C-6727-4028-89ED-8B100F07DD57@microsoft.com>, Hughmn wrote: > > I suspect I won't get much sympathy here, given previous comments about cgms > > and the dark ages, but here goes... > > Do you have a non-proprietary example you can share? Thanks for sending the file along, Hugh. My. That IS a hefty little fella. Short version: after inserting the picture, try a Copy/PasteSpecial, as WMF onto a second slide and see if you can ungroup that. And herewith the Windy version: I tried it in 2003 and was able to insert it as picture and then ungroup it (though once it's ungrouped everything sloooowwwwssss dooooowwwwwnnnnnnnnnn). I also tried inserting it then doing a copy/Paste Special/as WMF and then ungrouping that instead. It feels a bit quicker that way. FWIW, this is on a computer with 2gb of memory. PPT never grabbed more than 80mb as I tested this but I started with a blank presentation, only one slide and just this one picture inserted. If you've got several of them or are working on a PC with more going on/less available RAM, you might be running into limitations there. I was also thinking about graphics driver limitations but that seems improbable; if that were a problem, I'd think you'd experience display corruption or outright crashes, but it'd be worth cutting back hardware acceleration as a test. How to set graphics hardware acceleration back http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00129.htm Also, ISTR that there's a limit to the number of objects permitted per slide. The picture you sent has 10,000 shapes once ungrouped. If you've added it to a slide with other graphics rather than my blank slide with just a couple text placeholders, you might hit a limit where I didn't. Worth checking .... try starting with a blank presentation, blank slide to see if that makes any difference. As to 2007 ... different kettle 'o fish, it seems. When I insert then ungroup in 2007, it asks me if it's ok to ungroup the picture, I say yes. I ungroup again. It asks me if it's ok. I say yes. I ungroup again ... do you see where this is leading? The old "How to keep an idiot entertained for hours" routine. I ran into exactly the same behavior in 2003 when I did a Copy/PasteSpecial/As EMF. I'm guessing that the CGM filter converts to EMF in 2007 where it converted to WMF before, and for some (idiot) reason, PPT won't ungroup the things. Fix is the same: copy/paste special/AS WMF and ungroup. And if you thought you saw slooooowwwwwww before, wait'll you try this one on. ;-) If you've got much editing to do after ungrouping, get some sweaters. Ice ages are gonna come and go while you wait for this puppy. FWIW, I used to find it easier to work with these big honkers in Corel Draw, but when I tried yours in Draw12, I got an "Unknown error" on import. Sigh. They just don't make 'em like they usedta. ----------------------------------------- Steve Rindsberg, PPT MVP PPT FAQ: www.pptfaq.com PPTools: www.pptools.com ================================================ |
