Why not WYSIWYG?
Hey-
I've been updating a presentation in PP2007 that was created in PP2002. After (exhaustive) tweaking and checking for accuracy, I found that when I created the new CD, then ran it from CD, that it was not WYSIWYG....and I'm confused. When I run the show on the system it runs perfectly. When I run it from CD some things have changed. What is confusing, when I go back to check the issues in the (now original) 2007 file, I can't see see the problems.....so it's all but impossible to know what to correct. In addition, I have a small .avi that runs (or is supposed to run) during the show and the same situation exists....runs on the computer....stalls and never runs on the CD. Can anyone tell me what I'm experiencing here (other than frustration and hate) and offer a solution? Thanks. |

RE: Why not WYSIWYG?
Jim,
Try some other ways: You can save your PowerPoint slides to images and then use Windows Movie Maker to make a movie and then burn it to DVD. You can also use some screen recording program to record your presentation. Can you be specific as to what is missing?

Re: Why not WYSIWYG?
Well, when you package for CD in 2007, PPT converts the file to a
97-2003-format file so it can run from the CD. This is because the compatibility pack won't run from the CD. And since the compat pack is necessary for the Viewer to open 2007-format files, the PPT Viewer on the CD needs that older-format file. I know, I know. Don't shoot the messenger. So I'm guessing the problematic stuff is related to the conversion. For example, SmartArt is converted to an image in the 97-2003 format, so it won't animate in the Viewer. Can you give us some specifics as to what has changed? We may be able to offer you some "best practices" or workarounds when designing specifically for a CD. Or it could be just some old bugs that are coming to light now. I know there were a couple that tend to show up when the 2007 package for CD is used, but I couldn't tell you what they are specifically, sorry. Round-tripping through HTML in an older version before opening in 2007 often clears them out. (Again, don't shoot the messenger. I think it's a stupid excuse, too.) -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://tinyurl.com/36grcd PowerPoint 2007 Complete Makeover Kit http://tinyurl.com/32a7nx "Jim Varner" <pinger@ec.rr.com> wrote in message news:eZ8JlrM7IHA.2064@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Hey- > I've been updating a presentation in PP2007 that was created in PP2002. > After (exhaustive) tweaking and checking for accuracy, I found that when I > created the new CD, then ran it from CD, that it was not WYSIWYG....and > I'm confused. Re: Why not WYSIWYG?
OK, heres a few examples: (there were several)
1-there was (is) at least on situation where a text box with, say, six lines of text with normal spacing shows on the new CD that on the new CD shows with maybe 8-10 spaces between two words where there is the nomal ONE space when I look at it on the system. 2-there were two instances where successive lines of scipt with a time entrance set at RISE UP. I think there's ten line...each one stopping below the preceeding...so where all have come up you can read them all at the same time. The first few, it looks like every letter is coming up on top of one another and is compressed into the area the size of a dime, then all of a sudden, one comes up perfectly, then the new few come up mess up, like the first one. 3-there was one heading text box where everything is centered in the old version, and on the new CD, the text is way up on top, and only the top or the bottom of it is actually visible...I don't recall which.. 4-there is the instance I mentioned in the post where a 10 second .avi (supposed to run concurrently with audio) does not run...stays black....while the audio runs. All set at auto and across sides, and with previous ( like I said , this looks all great when run on the machne) 5-there is an instance where there is a photo of someone with a text boxt to the left with three words on three successive line. The last letter on the word on the first line wrap down and puts itself on the second line. Those are the ones I can decipher on the notes that I was scribbling as I tried to watch the new CD. Call me naive, but I was hoping against hope that PP2007 would be smart enough to be able to convert 2002 in an intellible way, but...... Now this wouldn't be so bad if I could see all this stuff and just fix it....but I can "see" any problems in the original .ppt. I'm thinking the best fix may be to go in and totally re-create the problems slides, re-pulling from the outside anything I need, re-formatting, re-timing, and deleting the old slide. The avi. was created in 2007, so I don't know what to do there.....maybe just try to do what I want to do with a still. Part of the difficulty is having to go thru the entire CD to get to the bad slides...like I haven't been though this presentation 200 times already. I have love-hate relationship with PP. RE: Why not WYSIWYG?
Burning the presentation to video or DVD may works. Office PowerPoint 2007
does not support the direct burning of content to any DVD formats. As an alternative, copy your presentation to a folder, and then use DVD-burning software to import the content and create a DVD. DVD-burning software, such as PPT to DVD Burner(http://www.dvd-ppt-slideshow.com/ppt_to_dvd/),it will retain the original music, animation, movie clips, and slide transitions in PowerPoint presentations, and may addresses your issue. Re: Why not WYSIWYG?
Okay, I have a little more time now.
1, 2, 3 and 5 seem like either a missing font or an "old bug coming to light." I'd first check the font and embeddability and all that. I think the 2007 Viewer has trouble with some fonts, embedded or not. I don't have any solid evidence -- it's just a gut feeling. Second, I know I have seen this type of thing in the past -- if I recall correctly, at my request, a user here emailed me a file exhibiting similar behavior. I was able to round-trip the file through HTML in PPT 2003, and that resolved the issues. I don't like that process being the workaround because it requires that you have a previous version of PPT available -- but it's the best I've got. Do you have a previous version around so you could try that? Round-tripping often weeds out the woollies, so it's definitely a good thing to try. http://www.pptworkbench.com/html/round_trip.htm for instrux. Oh yeah, also make sure you have the latest PPT 2007 Viewer. Download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en (It's not the same one that shipped with PPT 2007.) When you are testing the CD, are you testing on the same computer you created the CD on, or are you testing on a different computer? For #4, the .avi, I don't know why this would happen, especially since the ..avi runs in PPT 2007 itself. I would convert the AVI to WMV and see if that helps. PFCPro and PFCMedia each have a fully functional trial version available; you could use either to do this conversion. http://www.playsforcertain.com/index.html I totally agree that this type of thing is frustrating, and I wish it weren't so. I guess our challenge is to figure out what's going on in your presentations and try to fix them the least painful way. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://tinyurl.com/36grcd PowerPoint 2007 Complete Makeover Kit http://tinyurl.com/32a7nx "Echo S" <msnewsgroups@echosvoiceUGHSPAM.com> wrote in message news:%23%23ulXaQ7IHA.2072@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Don't have time for a longer response, but this one > >> 5-there is an instance where there is a photo of someone with a text boxt >> to the left with three words on three successive line.
