had a student I was training create a jeopardy style deck. Upon
troubleshooting ways to prevent the slides automatically advancing to
the next slide discovered this bug which killed the animation on the
slide between the question and the answers (or in jeopardy terms;
questions in the form of an answer and answers in the form of a
question)

Any workaround?

Yup, it sure does.

But it does that in 2003 also, so I'm guessing it's "by design."

You can use Kiosk mode to keep from accidentally moving to the next slide.
