Smooth point vs. straight point

When you edit points in an object, you have the option of adding or changing
a point to be a corner, smooth, or straight point. I understand the
difference between the corner point and the other two. However, I'm
struggling to see any big differences between the smooth and straight point
options. Does someone know what the difference is and under what
circumstances I should use one over the other?

Here's how I grok it:

A Smooth point forces the length of both adjustment handles to be the same; you
can adjust the angle of either handle but the other handle angle will change to
ensure that the handles are in a straight line, tangent to the curve.

A Straight point allow you to change the length of either adjustment handle
rather than forcing them to change together. The two handles still form a
straight line tangent to the curve though.

A Corner point allows you to move both of the adjustment handles independently.

Play around a bit with each and you'll quickly get a better idea how and when
to use each than I could bore you with by babbling on about it here. ;-)
