Re: Step by Step instructions on how to setup Project Server
Hi Oz_cast,
you can start at the MS TechNet site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc303399.aspx There are also many blogs out there with good info, this is one of them: http://www.pptspaces.com/msprojectre...7cbc844d&ID=31 The folks at MS Project Experts have written several excellent books on Project and Project Server. I have Implementing and Administering Microsoft Office Project Server 2007on my desk in front of me right now. I highly recommend it. It was written by Mr. Gary Chefetz and Mr. Dale Howard, both of whom frequent this list: https://www.projectserverbooks.com/s...p?id=213&bc=no All that said, Project Server is a non-trivial application. I highly and strongly recommend contracting with a reputable consulting company to do your implementation. Implementing Project Server is not trivial, implementing it correctly is downright hard. Hope this helps, Crook "oz_cast" <ozcast@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:95517F17-0633-4226-9E4F-F78E0B247D44@microsoft.com... >I was wondering if anybody was kind enough to show me step by step on how >to > setup Project Server please. > I have never use it > > Thank you very much in advance. > > |

Re: Step by Step instructions on how to setup Project Server
I am the only IT person at my site and I have never worked with Project..
installed the 180 Trial version but I am lost way lost.. I was told that it was very simple.. I dont think so.. its super hard.. I will try to check out the books.. otherwise.. I am going to get a hold of a consultant and make them do it for me.. which my company wont be too happy about it. Whoever told you that configuring Project Server 2007 is easy is either sadly mistaken or a complete fool. As you have found out the hard way, Project Server 2007 is a powerful and very sophisticated tool. I would strongly recommend you purchase our "Implementing and Administering..." book on Project Server 2007. We wrote this book using a step-by-step methodology to configure the system according to your company's project management requirements. The trick, however, is understanding your company's requirements. Do you have the foggiest idea about your company's project management processes, methodologies, and reporting needs? If not, your company is failing you and that is not your fault. You need to gather this information before you start, and in our book, we even discuss the kind of information you need to gather before configuring the system. If you need to hire a consultant, this is not your fault. Your comment that your company won't be too happy about this sad to say the least. Someone gave you a tool to install and configure, assuming it is simple, and then it's not simple. Whose fault is that? Certainly not yours, my friend. I wish you the very best. Please let us know if we can assist you. -- Dale A. Well, I'm sorry but I don't see a winning scenario for you or your
company. If you're the only IT guy in a company full of "executives," Project Server probably isn't your highest priority and it certainly isn't the lowest complexity of the things you undoubtedly have on your plate. On the other hand, you've got a closet full of bosses who not only don't know what they don't know, worse, they THINK they do and they definitely know who they're going to lay the blame off onto...;-) ===== Richard Warren [MBA, PMP, MCITP for EPM] http://richardlwarren.info -----Original Message----- From: oz_cast [mailto:ozcast@discussions.microsoft.com] Posted At: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 6:46 PM Posted To: microsoft.public.project Conversation: Step by Step instructions on how to setup Project Server Subject: Re: Step by Step instructions on how to setup Project Server Im in charge of IT cuz Im the only one here.. but I have the CEO and vps that want this thing for just one item.. not like they really need it.. told them I would setup like the chart on excel.. Re: Step by Step instructions on how to setup Project Server
Hi oz_cast,
Dale already said it yesterday, but since you've mentioned a lack of familiarity with Project and Project Server I'll say it explicitly. Project Server is overkill for one project. You could use Project 2007 Standard to manage the project. Project Standard is a thick client app vs. the thin client Project Server. Project Standard has nice Gantt charts that ought to make the bosses happy. Project is not terribly intuitive to use (mostly because project management via Critical Path Method is something not generally taught in standard curriculums at any level), but you could get by with a good book like the Ultimate Learning Guide to Microsoft Office Project 2007, also by Howard and Chefetz, and also on my desk right now. https://www.projectserverbooks.com/shopexd.asp?id=114 Hope this helps, Crook "Richard L.
