How to determine which Publisher version was used to create a PUB
Our new secretary accidentally removed MS Publisher from her computer. In
looking for the original CD, all I could find was one for Publisher 98. I'm sure we have a later version, but no one knows exactly which version. Is it possible to tell from a .pub document which version it was created with? Thank you! |

Right-click any Publisher file, properties, it will tell you when the file was
last modified. You will get a clue. Are you sure the Publisher program was removed and not just the startup icon? Look in the program files in the Office folder for the MSPUB.EXE file. If you find it, drag a copy to where it was before. -- Mary Sauer MSFT MVP http://office.microsoft.com/ http://msauer.mvps.org/ news://msnews.microsoft.com "sjones" <sjones@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:E9FC785D-FFC4-4300-A92F-0EF5BD79D23D@microsoft.com... > Our new secretary accidentally removed MS Publisher from her computer. Re: How to determine which Publisher version was used to create a
I found the MSPUB.exe file, but I don't think it's what I need, because she
has since installed a trial version of Publisher 2007. This exe file is probably for that. Also, looking at the date-last-modified doesn't really relate to the version of Publisher. If, say, Publisher 98 was installed, a document created with it could still have a 2008 modified date. How would that be useful information? Re: How to determine which Publisher version was used to create a
Publisher files will have a last modified date, if the file was modified in 1998
then you can be sure it was created with Publisher 98 version. I only suggest looking at the modifying date because you weren't sure what version you had previously. You might run the Belarc Advisor, if your old Publisher is on your computer it will tell you. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html -- Mary Sauer MSFT MVP http://office.microsoft.com/ http://msauer.mvps.org/ news://msnews.microsoft.com "sjones" <sjones@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:ABD284AE-1F5F-4631-B077-1C4734029058@microsoft.com... >I found the MSPUB.exe file, but I don't think it's what I need, because she > has since installed a trial version of Publisher 2007. Mary,
When right clicking on a pub file, selecting Properties it gives me Opens with Publisher 2 I checked a 1995 file which also gave me the Publisher 2 response. Re: How to determine which Publisher version was used to create a
Don, It matters not what version created a file when you have Publisher 2007,
the properties will only have 2007 as the opener. It is the same with 2003. I can't remember when it changed. I have 95 files that says it will open with 07. I can change the associations of course. -- Mary Sauer MSFT MVP http://office.microsoft.com/ http://msauer.mvps.org/ news://msnews.microsoft.com "Don Schmidt" <Don Engineer@PNB.Retired_1987> wrote in message news:9NqdnUKH567PUh3VnZ2dnUVZ_t_inZ2d@posted.palin acquisition... > Mary, > > When right clicking on a pub file, selecting Properties it gives me > > Opens with Publisher 2 > > I checked a 1995 file which also gave me the Publisher 2 response. > > I have Publisher 2000 > > > -- > Don > Vancouver, USA > > > "Mary Sauer" <mary-sauer@mycolumbus.rr.com> wrote in message > news:Oz6IreP6IHA.2336@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >> Publisher files will have a last modified date, if the file was modified in >> 1998 then you can be sure it was created with Publisher 98 version. I was hoping the Properties would give a clue as to which version of
Publisher created it. Thanks for the clarification. Re: How to determine which Publisher version was used to create a PUB
It may not work for you but you can open the file in Notepad (make sure word
wrap is turned on). I have just tested some of my old files and a few I just created in different versions of Publisher. Here is what I found. Publisher version 2.0 will show somewhere in it the words Publisher 2.0. Publisher 98, 2000 & 2003 will all show Publisher 3.0 (that is the file type apparently.) Look through the document in Notepad for the following two items. The first is the words "Publisher 3.0" and the second is for the default printer which may have the letters for the printer spaced out like "H P L a s e r j e t......" or may be together like "HP Laserjet..." In each of the documents I opened this is what I found: 98 embeds the name of the default printer early in the document but Publisher 3.0 is very near the end of the document. 2000 embeds the name of the default printer before where it says Publisher 3.0 2003 embeds the default printer much later after the Publisher 3.0 line, very near the end of the document. I don't have a working copy of Publisher 97 or XP to try at this time and these are guesstimates (WAGs) of what you may find. Hope it helps but I really can't guarantee anything.
