Linking Visio Orcharts to Excel data
Good morning
I'm trying to create dynamic links between an Excel org data source and Visio orgchart in Visio 2007 Standard. Visio 2007 Inside Out doesn't say so, but I think this can only be done in Visio Professional, not Visio Standard. Alternatively, how to create the links? -- Compleat Amateur |

RE: Linking Visio Orcharts to Excel data
Yes, it can be done in Visio standard. Easy way is to start an org chart
drawing. Then there will be an Organization Chart entry on the toolbar. Select the import organization data. That will start a wizard which should get you thru the process. From the Visio help, there's a demo: "Create your organization chart by using the Organization Chart Wizard" You might also search this site and the general questions for additional info on the org chart wizard. Hope this helps. RE: Linking Visio Orcharts to Excel data
Hiya WapperDude, thanks for the post.
I'm not sure we are on the same wavelength yet ..... creating static Visio orgcharts from Excel data (and vice versa) is dead easy, done it quite a few times. What I want to do, having done this, is create permanent links between the Excel HR data file and the Visio orgchart, so changes in either can be reflected in the other. I don't think that's what you are referreing to, forgive me if I'm wrong. -- Compleat Amateur "WapperDude" wrote: > Yes, it can be done in Visio standard. Easy way is to start an org chart > drawing. RE: Linking Visio Orcharts to Excel data
My apologies! I misunderstood. I believe this may have been talked about is
some previous posts. Try searching using some combination of org, excel, etc. I've not tried to do what you're after, but it strikes me that you may have to write some VBA code. You might want to check out David Parker's book, "Visualizing Information with Microsoft Office Visio 2007". Search for his name, and you'll get a link. Hope this helps. RE: Linking Visio Orcharts to Excel data
Ahhhh, so this is not a common thing to try? I couldn't find any specific
reference on this site as you suggested, but I get lost in technical mazes pretty quickly! It's frustrating, because I'm pretty sure it is do-able, tho maybe only in Visio Pro, as I mentioned earlier. I'll look at Parker's book, thanks for the ref -- Compleat Amateur "WapperDude" wrote: > My apologies! I misunderstood. I believe this may have been talked about is > some previous posts. RE: Linking Visio Orcharts to Excel data
I found a reference in the Visio General Users Forum: RE: Linking Visio
Orcharts to Excel data. At the end of that post, I refer to one more posting. But, basically, what you want to do isn't a normal function. The Wizard just takes "snap shots", it doesn't maintain any dynamic link. Final reference to check out is: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa701255.aspx But I think you'll find the most comprehensive information in Mr. Parker's book.
