Is there a way to extend the life of a 2008 server RC? I tried using
slmgr.vbs -rearm but it reported an unknown parameter error.

Download a proper Trial and install the trial version, then when you are
happy with the OS, buy a licence and install a licensed copy.

I have to agree with Edwin. Why are you running an RC version when the
official release version is available?

This is an MSDN RC. I can reinstall- was hoping to just do an upgrade-but
that isnt working without reinstalling. I have the latest disk and will
probably do a fresh install. Was hoping to save a few items- but no big
deal
