We are currently running Exchange 2003 on a server with mirrored 18GB
SCSI hard drives. As you probably guessed, the drives are filling up
with the logs as the Database is stored on the D drive.

Is there a way to break the mirror on the Boot drive, insert a bigger
hard drive and remirror on a bigger drive and not lose any of our data
or have to reinstall??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You would still end up with a mirrored 18gb partition on the larger drive.
Do you have Ghost, or some other imaging software? That would solve your
problem.

Hello jasongrubbs,

Do you have space available in the server for more harddisks? Then you can
move the database files just to the new added disk without playing around
on the mirrored drive.

You mention the "Database is stored on the D drive" I'm assuming is
reffering to the Exchange Store? How big is your D drive? Have you
considered moving your applications off of the C and onto the D drive?
What's using all the space on C? It can't be just the logs themselves.

You can move the location of the logfiles in exchange... if they are
filling up your C: drive, i would move them to a different partition.

**I'm assuming by logs you are referring to the transaction logs.

Question 1: Why do you have so much data in Log files? Don't you ever
backup the server? Proper backups of Exchange with an exchange aware
backup program like NTBackup purge the log files.

Question 2: Why not add another array to the server and move the logs to
that... less complicated than trying to break a mirror and recreate and
then expand partitions...

The exchange transaction logs can expand at a large rate if a large number
of transactions are taking place. Sadly being hit for a lot of spam can do
that.

The logs can back up if a full online backup isn't done. This is what causes
the logfiles to commit and clear themselves up.
