I have been fighting my computer for days on end. Have uninstalled Office
2007 and EndNote, then reinstalled both. My initial problem has been solved
(which was that Word would freeze upon opening and give me an error message
that "an unknown error has occurred" in EndNote). However, the new issue is
that while I can now successfully open and use Word, when I go to exit the
program it freezes. I get a box that allows me to either restart the program
or search online for a solution and then restart. Either option only
restarts. When I then go to exit, it gives me two options: search online for
a solution and CLOSE the program or simply close the program.

I am at my wit's end. Any suggestions?

Got an HP printer driver installed? If so, please report this to HP: you
never know, they may actually fix the bug one day. Meanwhile, switch to a
different printer driver and only select the HP when you actually need to
print.

Try a different printer and test. Use the Generic Text driver from the
Windows install. Set it as the Windows Default and then test Word again.
